The Long Process Of It All...

So, you've written a screenplay and submitted it to everyone you can find or have ever heard of. this was no simple or menial task, but a combination of effort, sensibility, and determination. You were ulitmately proud of your work and hoped it would be well received by everyone who dared to pick it up and read it. This final written masterpiece of yours would be read and passed on to everyone who needed to make it turn into a reality.  Then time continued to march on and you have yet to see your mastepiece materialize into the reality you have spent months...possibly even years anticpating it.

I once watched Henry Winkler give an incredibly profound answer during an interview, detailing his experience with being recruited and enlisted as a member of the cast on a film he responded, "I waited..and I waited...and I waited."  Indeed, for many of us, this is exactly what the entire process has become.  However, the question remains, why is that exactly?

The entire process of writing a screenplay that becomes a top rated film is a delicate balance of art and science. First, we have to be certain that what we have written is something that the world wants and is receptive to. Next, we need to be certain that it our process of sharing it with the world, it also remains a top secret. Producers, directors, casting directors, and even other screenwriters, authors, and studio executives have to share our passion for where our screenplay will be carrying the world. Writing a screenplay (or a novel orr eview or any other work) is a long and complex process.

Now, after submitting copies of your completed screenplay to every channel you can find, you still feel confident that your work deserves a special spotlight. Perhaps you have even had requests for your screenplay from studios seeking to produce it for you. Copies have been shared with various directors and cast members (hopefuls?). Meanwhile, you are working to pull yourself together and piece your routine back to normalcy. The accomplishement of writing and completing this long screenplay was no simple endeavor!

The directors need to work with the cast members to ensure the proper emotions are being portryaed, the proper words in dialogue are being properly intonated and cast members in your film are standing in the proper angles as lighting is made to reflect in the proper degrees. The people involved in a film need to appear to be acting as natural and unrehearsed as absolutley possible. Perhaps your film involves a pet...  I currently have messages in to the owner of a 4-month old AKC registed yorkie puppy (formerly, the Yorkshire Terrier as originating from Yorkshire, England) and an owner of a litter of Great Pyrenese puppies (alternatively called Le Chien de Montagne des Pyrenees or Le Chien des Pyrenees in France). Still, where is the financing?  There are so many steps involved in this process. Not to mention that most producers, directors, and cast members have already decided that the screenwriter is the final person they want involved...even after the long process of writing and creating the script.

Of course, next comes the process of having to recruit and hire costume designers, set designers, and the many technical people who will decide which cameras and lights to utilize in order to make your script and the many scenes you have writen as vividly realistic as possible.

What are your thoughts on this process?

Sounds about right. A long, magical, frustrating process that can make or break the story.

Nice! Thanks for the words of encouragement, Douglas Esper! In the meantime, I have been busy working on my collection of books--  although, I must admit that my thoughts do occassionally return to the entire process even while engaged with other pursuits.
