SoCreate

just in case anyone's interested

so ... somehow i got invited to SoCreate's BETA trial, launch, thing – i can't remember ever checking a box for it ... but i probably did ... or maybe everyone got an invite

anyway – SoCreate is a new online screenwriting app that is meant to make screenwriting more fun, more intuitive and easier – watch the 30min (!) video to see how!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqYHxMe3iXs

[ you can visit the site here – https://dashboard.socreate.it/en/ – but you'll need to create an account for yourself ]

okay, setting aside the design/look of the website (which isn't for me), i'm not sure what the benefits are

maybe i'm "too experienced" (ha!), but it just seems to me to be a lot of busy work and mousing – and i'd like to avoid using my mouse while writing, particularly when writing the first draft when i just want to get all down ... which is why i like the elegant simplicity of John August's Highland 2 (fyi: available only for Mac OS)

perhaps the approach SoCreate takes, will be of help to total newbies ... so if there are any beginners reading this, let us know your thoughts

i did a bit of search, but couldn't find anything on how SoCreate plans to fund itself going forward – all those bells & whistles couldn't have been cheap to develop and populate – so kudos, i guess, for investing in their vision

so there you have it – a new screenwriting app with (apparently) a fair bit of money behind it – make of it what you will

I'm...not sure why you would bother to post this.

It's a paid app, for mobile devices, so you could finger paint a script instead of typing. In other words, completely useless for actually making a film. You're going to need to know how to type and type fast to write production draft, shooting draft, and the list goes on. Maybe, if it's a shoestring short you're willing to give away to any filmmaker, it might be useful, but that would make the app a massive waste of money.

i agree, in that the app seems to be pointless – but they got some money from somewhere to make, so i figured someone decided it was worth it and wondered if i was missing something

is it specifically for mobile devices? – i've only tooled around with it (briefly) on a desktop computer, and even there the interface seemed cluttered and bitsy ... i don't see it improving on a phone

as to cost, i couldn't find anything re subscription/prices, possibly because its still in beta ... or couldn't be bothered searching properly – but yeah, anything more than "free" would be expensive

Heh, I don't think you're missing anything. It's pretty much useless.

All apps are designed for mobile devices. Not just phones. There's iPads and Tablets. These days, a lot of different kinds of mobile devices. Depending on your OS and various technical details, apps can be used for desktops.

Beta always means it's progressing to paid version. It didn't use to mean that, but that's the current definition. Regardless, even if it stayed free forever, I wouldn't bother. It would just be a waste of time for me.

I've been sent an invite, but it requires a phone number to sign up, so that's big nopey-nope for me, for now. I'm all for anything that gets people writing, and lowers the barrier to entry.

Thanks for sharing that, Robert.

I watched the video. Found it interesting but like CJ would never share my phone number to join, I do think that someone in the future (could be next year or could be 20 years from now) all scripts will be written with images including scene and character images

Phone number is a big no for me as well. No, do not force me to download big files or send junk to my phone. No way, no how.

Scripts as images have already been done, for a...bloody long time. Pitch decks, bibles, sizzle reels, proof of concepts, not to mention the most obvious, filmmaking. Scripts as images only wouldn't be useful for a lot of screenwriting jobs in the industry. On set screenwriting jobs, for starters, where someone types last second changes on the spot.

If this app is used to get started with learning how to be creative, well, I could see a benefit. But I would still caution that this app wouldn't provide much for breaking in or production, and could be a bad habit.
