Hello, thanks for taking a look at who I am. Hopefully you aren't here because you were “misdirected,” that you want to find out more about just who this D.C. Copeland is after reading one of my loglines.

I'm an artist, a muralist, and a writer whose canvases and stories are for the most part writ large across time and space. While in college at the University of Miami, I co-founded Ecology Action of Florida. That sense of saving the environment can be found in many of my works.

While creating works of art and fiction, I supported myself and my family as the Warner Bros Pictures Florida Field Rep for Publicity and Promotion for nearly 20-years. During that time I got to know many successful creatives who were flown into the state to promote their movies. That interaction kept me going as a writer.

Following college I studied jazz dance and tap at the Ron Daniels School of Dance in North Miami. That inspired me to look deeper into the origins of tap and swing. Out of that came one of my earliest screenplays: "Once Upon A Time in Harlem." It is set during the Harlem Renaissance and based on actual events. Over the years it has morphed into a stage play called "Jitterbug!" (it will fit better on a Broadway marquee!). Jaz Dorsey, founder of the African American Playwrights Exchange (AAPEX), was the first to call it a “dancical,” a hybrid play that uses music from the "Great American Songbook" to help tell its story-- but without anyone breaking out into song to propel the story along. Noted director, actress, teacher, and playwright Petronia Paley staged two readings of it in NYC. The first was at the prestigious National Black Theatre in Harlem. The second reading was part of the Emerging Artists Theatre's New Works Festival championing new musicals. That reading had dance numbers by Emmy-nominated choreographer Jeffrey Page. Performed at the Tada! Youth Theatre in NYC, it sold out, got a standing-O, and me membership in the Dramatists Guild. Now available as a book, it has free Educator Manuals based on the National Core Arts Standards in Dance, Theatre, Music (Composition and Ensemble strands), Literature, and Social Studies/History. You can learn more about Jitterbug! at www.jittrbug.net

My two novels "Nokosee: Rise of the New Seminole" and "Nokosee & Stormy: Love and Bullets" have developed a YA following. Both are based on screenplays with teenage Tarzan and Jane heroes trying to save the world through an eco war in a contemporary setting: the Everglades. You can learn more about them at http://www.newseminole.com/

My most recent screenplay "Saving Lolita" is an action-adventure about fictional people embarking on an over-the-top dead-of-night caper to free Lolita, a real orca incarcerated at a Miami aquarium for over 50-years. Having lived in Miami for the most part of my life, writing the screenplay was a cathartic attempt at assuaging a guilty conscience. Unfortunately, Lolita is still there and the guilt has not abated. You can learn more about that screenplay at http://bit.ly/2gZUyxD
