Having graduated with MA in Film and Screen Production (Scriptwriting), I have acquired significant experience and a successful track record in theatre, commercial and in-house scriptwriting and production, both as part of a scriptwriting team and working individually.

“Stories are a communal currency of humanity” - Tahir Shah, Arabian Nights.

A long dead German philosopher theorised that people are both products and producers of their own environments. Psychologists might trace my fixation with the power of narrative to my own environment – to the oral traditions of my Irish, French, Welsh and Yorkshire lineage, further attributing my love of sagas to my vestigial Viking ancestry. With my formative years  split between a vibrant, populous, cosmopolitan loud Asian megapolis and one of the least densely-populated but most loquacious parishes in North Kerry's rich fertile vale of story-telling, scriptwriting has become my default way of getting my words in edgeways.

Inspired by tales of everyday heroism, I spent several years exploring the impact that war has on people’s daily lives by scripting, filming and narrating the YouTube short film, James Prendiville, Tale of An Irish Soldier, which was screened at the prestigious Across Asia Youth Film Festival.

I formed part of the project team at Derby’s Museum of Making that, under the tutelage of Andy Taylor-Smith, created short videos, typically built around interview formats, for many of the museum’s exhibit stands, supplementing the existing high quality online content, such as https://derbymuseums.org/collection/virtual-tour-of-the-museum-of-making/ These materials played a significant role in helping the Museum to achieve a Commendation in the recent ‘European Museum of The Year Award’ as well as garnering a number of other awards in recent years. while also increasing annual visitor numbers by 36% last year and generating a record economic impact of £4 million and SROI of 586% for each Pound invested in the museum in the period in question. As well as Andy Taylor-Smith, I have been fortunate to benefit from the encouragement and guidance of such variously talented filmmakers as Seyi Rhodes and from the exceptional mentorship of Professor Christine Parker, Professor Daithi McMahon and Dr. Teresa Forde.

With all my work, I'm keen to explore the opportunities for repurposing and reformatting across multiple media, including stage, radio, print and gaming formats, in addition to live action, illustrated and stop motion screen, seeking to exploit different formats to tell the same stories in different ways to different audiences - I'm in the early stages of planning to create new versions of Macbeth and Hamlet and many other classics in formats such as stop motion (possibly Lego character), graphic novel and RPG video game adaptations (all of which have been done well already but the potential to transcend seems almost limitless).

My greatest strengths as a scriptwriter are my openness to embrace the hard work involved in learning how to tackle the full range of media forms, my ability to work to deadlines, my adaptability to produce content tailored for audiences of all ages and interests and my attention to detail, even under extreme time constraints, ensuring that even the smallest details are consistent and correct. Having just completed five years in academia, - BA Joint Honours in American Studies and Film & TV, followed by MA in Film and Screen Production (Scriptwriting), I am extremely hungry to put my learning into practice in any suitable opening, and I am open to freelance, project, part-time or full time roles.

Hopefully during my time here, I have managed to absorb some of the spirit of one of the most famous erstwhile occupants of Derby who reportedly said “Rome wasn’t built in a day but that’s because I wasn’t on that particular job.”
