What shaped my life as a writer?

I'm a Vietnam era veteran. When I left the military after 8 years, I wanted little to do with authority, or anyone telling me what to do. But after a few years of associating with an outlaw motorcycle club, I realized I still had people telling me what to do. I've been a bar manager and bouncer in a rowdy bar.

When I write about getting stabbed, or hit over the head with a baseball bat or pool cue, or being in a gun fight, knife fight or bar room brawl, I'm speaking from experience. I know what it's like to have a friend stitch up my knife wounds because a hospital visit would be reported to police. I lived my early life on the razor's edge. I have the scars to prove it.  One day I woke up and realized I needed to get out of that life.

So I moved far away and rejoined the mainstream of society holding a variety of jobs in different locations until I retired. I still ride. But now I ride by myself for the pure joy of riding. Most of my friends from the old days are dead or serving life in prison. Somehow, by the grace of god, I got through all that  and left it behind.  If I had it to do over again I would have done some things differently, but the best experiences I wouldn't trade for anything.

I write for my own enjoyment and for others.

Some day I hope to get published. Not to get rich. Not to get famous. But to share my stories with others. And if I can make someone else laugh, or smile, or cry, then that too is priceless.
