I am a writer for stage & screen, living in East London. I am also an academic, currently based at Middlesex University.
My scripts tend to be based around the deep human or spiritual conflicts of their protagonists – the need for love and acceptance, something to believe in, desires and temptations, terrible rage and self-sacrificial acts. My characters are vibrant and often larger-than-life. There’s always a mixture of humour and pathos. Sometimes very nasty things happen, there’s some really mean and low-down characters, but there's also saints, great acts of benevolence and moments of connection and peace.
I have written more than 20 plays for the stage, many of which have been produced or workshopped by professional theatre companies in the UK. My plays Fat Souls (1993), Coward (2013) and Reformation (2019) are published by Playdead Press. I wrote an adaptation of Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress on commission from the Royal Shakespeare Company.
I have written short film scripts - four of which have been produced; I also directed two of these: Apeth (2007) and Academic (2011). I have developed a number of feature film screenplays and television projects, including commissions from 5v2 Films, Mountview Films and Pearson TV.
I have taught scriptwriting at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, at Middlesex University and elsewhere. I have produced academic writing on such subjects as story, my own writing practice, and the intersection of drama with new technologies. Since 2016 I have been Head of the Department of Media at Middlesex. I was awarded a PhD. by Public Works, based around my stage writing, in 2021.
