Joan Albright is a science-fiction and fantasy writer who sometimes dabbles in steampunk. A world traveler before the age of six, Joan is a collector of languages and cultural ideas. Unable to find a linguistics major at her local university, she chose instead to study a wide range of topics, from art and illustration to computer science and graphics technology. She taught herself HTML and PHP, among other programming languages, and has been building webpages for fun and profit since she was sixteen years old. A true polymath, Joan is also a certified Wilderness Guide, and spent a summer packing mules in Wyoming’s Bridger-Teton National Forest.

Joan’s hobbies include translating manga and anime from Japanese, fighting with the Belegarth Medieval Combat Society (her preferred weapon style is sword and shield, followed closely by Florentine), and collecting back-to-basics skills such as soapmaking, sewing, gardening and woodworking. She and her husband have five children, and their dream is to one day move out of the suburbs and create a permaculture paradise on the edge of civilization.

Though never able to serve herself, Joan comes from a family with three generations of proud service in the U.S. Air Force (including a younger sister). Joan did participate in an AFJROTC program in high school, an experience which impacted her deeply. Among other main influences in her writing, she cites the works of writers Robert Jordan (The Wheel of Time), Anne McCaffrey (Dragonriders of Pern), E.E. Smith (Lensman), and Timothy Zahn (Heir to the Empire), as well as directors Masashi Ikeda (Gundam Wing) and Joss Whedon (Serenity).
