* Now looking for new reps - my current firm specializes in Influencer Talent, and their literary division is... doesn't exist anymore.
July 2022 - Well, as you guys know the entire planet is melting, murder hornets, murder-flu, f'ing Godzilla is right around the corner. So, I've just been writing since the 'meetings' part of a writer's life isn't really happening. LOOKING FOR REPS/MANAGERS who are willing to submit MORE THAN 1 project at a time.
I'm currently in the host of the "American Institute for Cryptocurrency Invesrors" a show produced by MoneyMapPress that has me educating people on digital assets and common sense investing. Hey, gotta pay the bills until I sell some scripts:)
My name is Nicholas Black, my background is in psychology and philosophy — I studied at the University of Texas, in Austin. I'm a former Navy diver, member of the French Foreign Legion, and for a short time I was both an international fugitive and operative in a counterterrorism operation that got all gummed-up in bureaucratic nonsense, the result of which was the 3/11/2004 Train Bombings in Madrid. One day I'll probably try to get that knocked out as a limited series, but for now, fiction is my wheelhouse!
For a few years I fought in MMA, and trained in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for about 15 years. That led to bodyguarding and security consulting gigs, which equaled long nights in hotel rooms with little to do, so I started to write. Writing is great because, for the most part, nobody gets shot at... for the most part.
In 2017, my thriller/suspense pilot, “Leather Apron“ won the Los Angeles International Screenplay Award for Best Television Pilot. Other than that, I’m pretty much unknown. I love to write, with 22 pilots and 2 features in my library of essentially unread properties.
I originally started writing novels – “See Jack Die”, “How my Gay Uncle f’ed up Christmas”, “Chasing Darkness”, and a bunch of other mostly random titles. I moved out to Los Angeles in 2012 to learn how to write for television. I mentored with a CBS executive, a Netflix executive, and the head writer for the hit series Dexter. In addition to learning how to write, I've learned how to exist in a writers room, be respectful of ideas that might be contrary to my own, understand the value of a good beat sheet, and the nuances of story. I spent many years reading every script that the networks were buying to get a feel for the quality and diversity that projects need to become a commodity.
I'm mindful of budgets whenever it's possible, and I try not to write the production into a corner and expect the crew to shoot their way out of it. People matter. Time matters. Money matters. As best I can, I try to achieve compromise between the three, while maintaining the audience experience.
I would say that my strengths are in the one-hour television, Single cam - thriller and suspense; and in the 1/2 hour, rather edgy comedy space.
I work on scripts with the same dedication I apply to using a knife in a knife fight... long, deep, and continuously. I meet timelines, and I’m not a douche bag to work with… which I think is important. If you find the way I write appealing, perhaps we can work together. My friends are all industry kids - Brando Eaton (Dexter, American Sniper, Secret life, etc.), Noah Centineo (The Fosters, TATB, Tagged, Charlies Angeles, etc.).
They got the looks, I got the writing chops:)
