“Alien Soldier” is a contemporary fantasy novel. The spiritual beliefs of the Indian Nation are entwined with American history and the CIA.
In 1860, Killian Kilkenny, a twenty-eight-year-old man, is a trapping beaver in New Mexico. He encounters a Navajo Indian, who, in reality, is an alien. They fight, and both shed blood. Killian is badly wounded, as is the Indian whose bluish blood flows into Killian’s eyes and mouth. Suddenly, the alien Indian stands up, glares down at Killian. His body bursts on fire, and then there’s a bright flash of blue light followed by a blue-white ribbon of smoke, which rises into the sky. Killian becomes ill from the contact with the bluish blood and passes out. Hours later, when he awakes, he is a soldier in the Army’s 1st Cavalry. Killian has no idea how this has happened. Over the next few weeks, he’s bewildered to learn; he has become an alien chameleon who can transform into any human form and is practically immortal. During warfare, he discovers he can’t be killed by gunfire, swords, knives, or any other devices, as his wounds began to self-heal in a matter of minutes.
Later, from an Indian medicine man, Killian learns he’d become an alien Blue, who could only be killed by fire. For the next one hundred years as a soldier, he fights for his country and against his one chief nemesis, Lupan, a Navajo Indian, an evil Blue Warrior.
The one area where he and Lupan shared emotions was where the Bureau of Indian Affairs caused considerable trauma among the Native Americans due to the government-sponsored boarding schools program. Both he and Lupan handled the problem in their own way.
Lupan and the other Blue Warriors hate the whites for what they have done to their people and seek to kill them. Killian and Lupan become arch enemies and intend to set one another on fire, thus sending their foe to his death.
Their fatal clash occurs during the Viet Nam War. With the aid of a few fierce fighting, local Montagnards and other friendly Star Blues Killian sets a trap for Lupan and his Blue Warrior followers. At the top of a high hill, they surround Lupan and the Blue Warriors and, using flamethrowers, ignite them. The air is filled with the sound of howling as they burst on fire. There are bright blue flashes, and the Warriors vanish as blue-white smoke rises into the sky.
