Seven years ago, on the Night of a Thousand Lanterns, a small boy fell from the sky and crashed through Chronowick's festival crowds before hitting the cobblestones of LowerWick. RUNAX MIMIR, an aging clockmaker, reached him first. The child — no older than four — was alive, barely. His right arm was shattered beyond saving. Before amputating, Runax noticed something burned into the skin: a brand. An oval gear wrapped in a curling cloud. He sketched it, pinned it to his workshop wall, removed the arm, built the boy a brass replacement, and raised him as his own. He named the boy BRIGHTSPARK.
Seven years later, Brightspark is eleven — freckled, quick-eyed, and possessed of a mechanical gift so instinctive he barely knows he has it. He lives contentedly in Runax's cluttered workshop, scavenging parts and fixing clocks, and he intends to stay there forever. When Runax enters him in the placement exams for the Mountain Guildworks — a legendary engineering school carved into the Stormbreaker Mountains — Brightspark sabotages his own performance. He writes wrong answers, draws backwards schematics, and builds a practice regulator that sounds like a bucket of rocks. Weeks later, an acceptance letter arrives anyway. Runax tells him: if they accepted him despite duck drawings and blank answers, they saw something he's been hiding from himself. He tells him to go.
The journey to the Guildworks is its own ordeal — steam tram, magma hauler, underwater ferry, hydrogen skyship — and at the end of it, the school appears through the clouds: brass towers, waterfalls turning to mist, a machine forged into a mountaintop. Despite himself, Brightspark is stunned.
At the Guildworks, First Year students — called Foundations, or "Smudges" — are issued gray uniforms and told they are nothing yet. Brightspark finds his people. SERASURINA, tall and fierce, shoves a contemptuous UpperWick boy named VALEN in the chest on day one and introduces herself as a future master engineer. BRANN, massive and perpetually convinced of imminent disaster, turns out to have a photographic memory that rivals Brightspark's mechanical instinct. And THEONGARD, watchful and near-silent, appears through a ceiling vent, makes one observation about Brightspark's arm that reveals he sees everything, and becomes the group's shadow. Meanwhile, GUILDMASTER CERIN — head of the Aetherion Guild, silver-threaded coat, eyes like a collector appraising a specimen — takes an unsettling interest in Brightspark from the start.
Trophy Season begins: the Guilds compete for the Guildstone, a symbol of school supremacy, through a series of escalating challenges. As Smudges, the four friends serve as anonymous support crew — responsible for everything, credited for nothing. Brightspark saves Valen's drone during the Tidarian Deep Dive and anchors a slipping vehicle during the Foundations Scramble. Valen accepts the points and gives nothing back. During the Vulkanian Night Forge, working in extreme heat, Brightspark spots a figure high on a maintenance gantry above him — dark coat, wide-brimmed hat — deliberately jamming the coal feed. Their eyes meet. The man walks away.
The Shadow Man has been watching since Brightspark arrived. Theongard has been tracking him for weeks. When Brightspark's glider tether snaps during Aetherion flight training — sending him into a terrifying freefall that ends with his mechanical hand buried in the platform deck and his boots dangling over a two-thousand-foot drop — Theongard examines the rope. Cut, not snapped. Sawed halfway through and greased to hide it. A note has been placed in Brightspark's bag: FOUND.
They go to Deputy Head Quill. She throws them out.
Through the library's Restricted Section — reached after Brann solves a thermal-expansion puzzle on a century-old vault lock — they find an archived newspaper. A lab belonging to Lord and Lady Valerius exploded on the Night of a Thousand Lanterns, seven years ago. Two confirmed dead. One missing child: Orion Valerius, age four. A photograph shows the burning tower — and in the background, standing apart from the chaos, a figure in a heavy coat and wide-brimmed hat. Not looking at the fire. Looking down at the cliff where something fell.
Brightspark is Orion Valerius. The Shadow Man was there the night he fell. He has been there ever since.
Meanwhile, Runax has sent a replacement arm in a crate addressed to "a student with rust issues" — the brass arm having been destroyed in the forge heat. The Steambreaker: tempered steel, hydraulic grip strong enough to flatten tin, a built-in grapple system. A note reads: It wasn't supposed to be ready until next year. But you don't seem to have the luxury of time.
The night before the Unity Challenge — the Trophy Season finale, in which all six Guilds build the Unity Titan together — the four of them find a hidden maintenance bay in the school's deep machine rooms. On the table: the Titan's blueprints, defaced in red ink. Circles around Valve Seven. A bypass drawn in. Someone has planned how to make the machine catastrophically overpressurize. The Shadow Man walks in before they can take the blueprints. He takes them and leaves.
They tell Quill. She calls Cerin. Listening through the door, they hear Cerin agree to check Valve Seven himself. He doesn't look like a man expecting to find nothing wrong. He looks like a man making sure the spike is still in place.
The Challenge begins. The Titan starts to fail. A pressure line ruptures. Students evacuate. Valen freezes on the scaffold directly above the Engine Pit, paralyzed, a structural beam cracking loose overhead. Brightspark fires the Steambreaker's grapple, catches Valen by his utility belt, and hauls him clear — the impact nearly tearing his shoulder from its socket. He sends Valen to run. Then he goes back in alone.
Inside the burning machine, following the blueprint Brann memorized in thirty seconds before the Shadow Man took it, Brightspark finds Valve Seven. A steel spike is wedged into the mechanism. The metal is white-hot. He grabs it with the Steambreaker. The arm holds. The spike comes free. The pressure releases.
Brightspark crawls out with his right sleeve hanging empty. The Steambreaker's gears have fused solid. It cannot be detached cleanly — the medics cut it off.
In the aftermath, Serasurina and Theongard chase the Shadow Man into the Underworks tunnels. They corner him. He doesn't run. He dismantles their accusations one by one — the glider wasn't him, the coal feed wasn't him, the Titan wasn't him. He tells them they found one ghost and there are a dozen more. He tells them to stop blaming the man watching the door and find the man holding the key. Then he blinds them with a chemical flash and vanishes — dropping a silver cufflink as he goes. The cufflink bears the Aetherion crest.
The school closes ranks. The official story is mechanical failure. Valen, alive because of Brightspark, tells him in the courtyard that he stole his dignity and promises to make him regret it.
Back in LowerWick, Brightspark carries the ruined Steambreaker home and apologizes to Runax for destroying it. Runax examines the scorched metal and says: I didn't build it to sit on a shelf. I built it to hold when everything else let go. It held. Then Brightspark notices the drawing on the workshop wall — the one that has been there his entire life, pinned above the drafting table among the everyday sketches and diagrams. He has never looked at it twice.

Runax tells him the truth. The brand was on Brightspark's wrist the night he fell. He removed it with the arm. He drew it because he thought one day the boy might need to know what he'd lost.
Brightspark looks at the drawing. He looks at the cufflink. He looks out the window toward the distant peak of the Guildworks, still shrouded in cloud. He was branded with the Aetherion crest before he could walk. The people who marked him run the most powerful Guild in the school. And somewhere between the brand, the burning lab, and the man who watched him fall — there is a truth that has been waiting seven years for him to come looking.
He is going back.
