Synopsis/Details
Think “Licorice Pizza” meets “The Iron Claw,” blending intimate, rough-edged Americana with a bruising, character-driven rise through the 1970s wrestling territories
Set in the gritty Carolina wrestling territories of the late 1970s, Jobber follows Max Stasevic, a gifted but directionless young wrestler chasing the dream he’s had since childhood.
Fresh off the bus and quickly humbled by the unforgiving circuit, Max is pressured into adopting a despised Soviet heel persona, Fedor Konstantinov, a character that ignites instant
fury in the crowds and unexpected opportunity in the ring.
As Max rises through the ranks, the line between performance and identity begins to blur. The heat that first thrilled him turns dangerous, and the world behind the curtain proves just as punishing: locker room politics, violent fans, and promoters who see him as both asset and expendable. His relationships fray, especially with Judy, the promoter’s daughter who becomes his closest ally, and with his own family back home, who watch in dread as he becomes the very villain his father once fled.
When Max is unexpectedly positioned for a championship run, the business forces him into a collision course with his idol—and into a reckoning with the persona that’s overtaken his life. What began as a dream becomes a haunting question of identity: who is Max Stasevic when the mask finally comes off?
