CLAIRE ANNETTE (9) wants to be a singer, climb a mountain and fly in an airplane. She would love to do all of these adventurous things, but she is far too scared. Today is Claire Annette’s ninth birthday and her GRANDMA (60s) has a special gift for her. It is a magical music box. Later that night, as Claire Annette drifts off to sleep, she dreams of the music box. Can there be such a thing as magic music? Will the music make her brave? Next day is reading day at school. Claire Annette is terrified; however, her music box plays music that only she can hear and this makes her brave. She gives the best reading of her life! The magic music continues playing and gives her the courage to win a solo part in choir and climb what used to be a scary rope in gym. All is right with Claire Annette’s world until her magic music box suffers and accident and is smashed into smithereens. With the help of her Grandma, Claire Annette comes to realize that magic music plays within herself. It was never the music box that made her brave; she did that herself.
