In a bordertown ranch on the US/Mexico border, the Noriega family has a scare when their youngest son, Ryan, is attacked by the Smith’s missing dog. He’s left with a deep but otherwise easily treatable wound while the dog is on the verge of death. Victor, the father of the Noriega family and vet, can’t save him and puts the dog to sleep. Sara is mad at Victor for this, but Ana, her mother convinces her that he had no choice. The stress of the event makes Victor get drunk, breaking his sobriety and angering Ana. They get out of the house to have an argument, but only a blood-spattered and wounded Ana is the only one who returns. Sara and Ryan find a dying Victor outside, begging Ana to look after the children.
Time passes and the family grieves, Ana’s wounds seem to make her ill. The Smiths arrive to console them with a cake and a bouquet of purple flowers. Paul, Ana’s brother-in-law, and crime blogger says there are rumors that she killed Victor, but she insists that it was a wolf. Sara is convinced that Ana was the one responsible for killing her father, thinking she had a motive after all the problems he gave her over the years. But Ryan is convinced that Ana is right and that not only was it a wolf, but a werewolf. One night, the house is invaded by mysterious intruders, but Ana scares them off. The fear of another invasion pushes Ana to lock down the house. Both children discover that she has kidnapped the Smiths and has kept them in the basement. Ana is convinced that come the next Full Moon, they will transform into werewolves.
Sara attempts to run away, but she stays behind to protect Ryan. Ana tortures the Smiths, trying to gather information about their real identities. The Full Moon comes and the Smiths don’t transform. Sara and Ryan fight their mother and free the Smiths. But once the Smiths are exposed to the Full Moon, they transform. Sara and Ryan fight against the werewolves. Paul arrives to help them but he’s fatally wounded by the Smiths. Ana escapes from the basement and transforms into a werewolf as well. The Noriegas fight against the Smiths, but Ana is mortally wounded. She asks Sara and Ryan to look after each other. The two siblings escape to Ana’s hometown in Mexico.
