Synopsis/Details
Set deep in the backwoods of Mississippi, Kudzu follows 14-year-old Niya Abner, a quiet, anxious girl who lives on the edge of a vast, overgrown valley choked by the creeping vine known as kudzu. Beneath its tangled green surface, something ancient stirs. The unseen presence weighs on Niya, manifesting as panic attacks she can’t predict or control.
Her father, David Abner, is the local sheriff, still haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his own father years ago in that same valley. When Niya’s only friend, Annie Carver, goes missing, suspicion quickly falls on a notorious escaped serial killer, Dan Carney, last seen driving through nearby Yazoo. David discovers Carney’s abandoned car submerged near the Carver property, shortly before Annie’s body is found, brutally murdered.
As federal agents descend and David leads the manhunt, Niya quietly begins her own investigation. What she uncovers is a generational curse, one that began when an ancestor denied his name to survive a racially charged act of violence. The violence that followed tore open a portal, unleashing an evil that now hunts the namesake it was promised. That ancient wound has festered in the land, and darkness has been hunting her bloodline ever since.
As the death toll rises and search teams are found slaughtered, it becomes clear that Carney was not the threat. They’ve been chasing the wrong evil. When David goes missing in the wilderness, injured and hunted, his family must brave the cursed valley to bring him back. But only Niya can face what truly lies beneath.
To save her father, she must confront the generational curse by reclaiming the Abner name and thus the identity her family tried to forget. Her journey is not just about survival, but about breaking cycles, confronting fear, and choosing to believe the truth of who she is: that she is known, she is named, and she was never alone.
KUDZU is a supernatural Southern Gothic thriller about spiritual inheritance, generational trauma, and the redemptive power of identity. It is the story of a girl who saves her family by remembering who she truly is.
