DJs Ed and Mel Jones had it all, fame, fortune and respect,. But when ratings hit a slump, an audacious ploy by Ed to boost their flagging fortunes backfires. The incident nearly cost Mel her life but costs both of them their jobs. Seven months later they are virtually blacklisted by the industry, and are facing ruin. Fate intervenes and the pair are thrown a lifeline - in hospital radio, launching a new national ‘Radio NHS’ - but ghosts from their past threaten to derail their careers before they’ve gotten back on track.

Why this story and why me?

In 2016, I had to give up a job and career that I had been doing for 15 years, due to health reasons. Hurt, and feeling humiliated, I developed low self esteem and depression. Desperate to feel useful again I started volunteering as a hospital radio DJ and fell in love with it. I found purpose again, and after a while I found screenwriting and created “making waves “, my love letter to hospital radio.

This is built on the idea of hospital radio as it exists now, but with a twist. The NHS is investing money into ‘nationalising’ hospital radio, with the ultimate aim of their being one hospital radio station for the whole of England, with programmes broadcast from different hospitals

Making waves is set in and around London.
