Synopsis/Details

Picking up immediately where Part One left off, Nicky and the Lost Star — Part Two follows twelve-year-old Nicky Reed, an aspiring journalist living in the charmingly eccentric small Canadian town of Destiny. Nicky is drawn deeper into a historical mystery when he begins to suspect that the Irish Crown Jewels — stolen in 1907 and never recovered — have been hidden in Destiny for decades. His chief lead is Miss Rea, an imperious, nearly-hundred-year-old local legend who turns out to be far more than she appears: a former Pinkerton agent with a long-buried past tied directly to the jewels, to Al Capone's criminal network, and to a bootlegging-era Cadillac everyone in town has been obsessing over.

Complicating matters is the arrival of Tex Von Reifen, a flamboyant Texas billionaire who has purchased a cache of old letters at auction and tracked a clue about "the Irish Star" all the way to Destiny. Tex is charming in a blunt, obnoxious way, but his intentions are mercenary — he wants the jewel for himself and doesn't much care who gets hurt in the process. The tug-of-war between Nicky, Miss Rea, and Tex plays out across the town's Heritage Day festivities, a tornado, a runaway Cadillac, and a confrontation at an abandoned grain elevator that ends with a broken leg and a shattered (fake) gem.

Woven throughout is Destiny's wonderfully odd supporting cast: Nicky's friends Maya and Ramesh (a would-be alien hunter convinced the black helicopter overhead is extraterrestrial), the bickering Rai and Ying families who've gone from mortal enemies to reluctant collaborators, the haunted hotel run by the long-bearded Tybalt, and the two irreverent Norse ravens Hugin and Munin, who serve as both comic relief and cosmic guides. The story ultimately takes Nicky from Destiny to Dublin, where he, Maya, and Ramesh recover the real jewels from a hidden dumbwaiter and return them to Ireland — earning the three kids the revived Order of St. Patrick from the President of Ireland herself. A post-credits scene teases the ravens' inability to resist one last heist, while a mid-air sequence hints at the next adventure: Oak Island and the Knights Templar.
