In 1958, the Queen declares it is the last season for Debs to be presented to her at Court. Peggy's snobbish mother, Florence, forces Peggy to attend against her will. At the Palace, Peggy is accosted by the super rich, odious playboy, Hector. Peggy gives him and her mother the slip. She wanders into the stables where she meets Roddy. He tells Peggy his father, Hiram, owns a Stable in Berkshire and is looking for a stable girl. If Peggy gets permission from both of her parents she can have the job. In the hopes of appeasing her mother, Peggy attends the Presentation. Florence is against Peggy taking a menial job, but Peggy's father, Thaddeus, persuades Florence to change her mind. Peggy moves to the country to take up her new job. She works hard and she and stable lad, Tub, become good friends. One day Peggy is allowed to ride Hiram's best brood mare, Rani, up in the Gallops. Hiram cautions Peggy to let Rani take it slow and easy. But Rani has other ideas. She takes off at full gallop, racing and easily beating the horses ridden by lads from other stables. Hiram, furious, sacks Peggy for endangering Rani. Roddy wanting Peggy to stay, proposes to her. He gives her his dead mother's engagement ring, further infuriating Hiram. Peggy, deeply hurt, seeks solace walking alone on the Berkshire Downs. A riderless horse careens towards her. She catches and calms the spooked horse, then goes searching for its owner. She finds Mick lying injured and unable to ride. Peggy rides Mick's horse, Spirit, to get help. When she visits Mick in the jockey rehab, she feels attracted to him. Tub arrives, looking for Peggy and discovers he and Mick were at Eton together. They catch up on old times. Peggy feeling a gooseberry, leaves them to it. Roddy then tells her that her mother phoned. Thaddeus has had a heart attack. Peggy stunned by the news, asks Roddy to take her to the station to catch the next train home, but Roddy insists on driving her back to London.
