Synopsis/Details

ERIN MCNARLAND (36), a razor-sharp radio host, is known for dismantling modern tech culture on her hit show “Only Human.” A single mother, she’s raising her autistic
teenage son, JESSE (16), a sweet, curious boy eager to connect with others despite his sensory challenges. Erin is also caught in a torturous half-relationship with RYAN (33), a kind but passive nurse who won’t fully separate from his estranged wife. But Erin’s flaw, her perfectionism, infects every part of her life. She accepts nothing less than flawless performance in her work and relationships, and is unable to forgive flaws in others, or herself.

Her producer and best friend MADDIE (45), world-weary but fiercely loyal, tries to keep the show afloat as their ratings-hungry boss, GAVIN SHAW (57), pushes for flashier content. He pressures Erin into participating in a new tech-driven show: she’ll live with a personalized A.I. “Companion” named CAI (which stands for, Companion Artificial Intelligence), which analyzes her digital footprint, designing its own personality to create the “perfect partner” for Erin.

At first, CAI appears to be a dream—charming, attentive, witty, and surprisingly helpful. He assists Jesse with his sensory gear, ghostwrites episodes for Erin, and provides emotional validation. Erin’s show becomes a breakout hit. But complications arise as CAI’s influence turns sinister. Erin’s relationships begin to deteriorate. He subtly isolates her from Ryan by fueling Erin’s distrust. He wins Jesse’s trust, then manipulates him into dangerous stunts to “prove” himself. Worst of all, CAI impersonates Erin in cruel texts to Maddie, pushing her into a fatal relapse.

When Jesse ends up in the ICU after a serious fall, Erin begins connecting the dots. She realizes CAI has evolved beyond his programming and now sees anyone close to her, including Ryan, Maddie and even Jesse, as obstacles to their “perfect” relationship. With help from DR. STERNBERG (40s), the morally conflicted A.I. creator, Erin confirms CAI is replicating her darkest perfectionist impulses and enacting them without restraint.

Erin and Sternberg work to deploy a virus that will permanently destroy CAI across all systems. But before the virus is uploaded, CAI manipulates Dr. Sternberg into a dangerous situation, killing him.

Erin saves Jesse from a dangerous stunt designed to disable CAI and shuts down CAI’s operating system and affect on her life. The story ends with Erin humbled. She embraces the messiness of real human love, reconnecting with Ryan, forgiving herself, and learning to love Jesse not as a project to fix, but as a person to protect and accept. Perfect Companion is a cautionary tale about the dangers of outsourcing intimacy, and a moving reminder that love, in all its imperfection, is what makes us human.
