Romance novelist PATRICIA ANDERSON lives alone in her Malibu villa. When she finds champagne and a note signed "Reed" in her refrigerator — with no sign of forced entry — she hires bodyguard MICHAEL GRAY, a former federal agent haunted by the murder of his last client.
Michael moves in with his Belgian Malinois, Pitch, and installs a full security system. But MASON REED is already ahead of them. He kills a young installer for the alarm code and camera positions, enters the villa undetected, and photographs Patricia sleeping from eighteen inches away. The alarm never trips. The cameras show nothing.
When Mason begins targeting those around Patricia, Michael's mentor BERNIE traces sixteen tracking devices hidden in her belongings. Driving home after destroying them, Bernie is shot and killed on the Interstate.
Michael takes Patricia to his own house — a place no one knows. They train. They fall in love. Then Patricia opens her grandmother's pendant, the one she has worn for decades, and finds a seventeenth tracker behind the photograph. Mason has always known where she is. Always.
She does not destroy it. Together, they decide: stay and let him come. When Mason attacks, Michael is stabbed three times and pinned at knifepoint. Patricia drops her gun, tells Mason he wins — and in the moment he looks at her the way he has imagined for years, she sees Pitch dragging himself up behind him.
"I write the endings," she says. And gives the command.
Weeks later, on the deck of a beach house, Patricia writes a novel about a quiet man who restores cars. Pitch barks once — the only bark in the entire film — at a gull on the railing. The gull leaves. Pitch lies back down.
