In 1864 Richmond, Union Colonel Thomas E. Rose is captured after the Battle of Chickamauga and sent to Libby Prison, a converted brick warehouse the Confederates believe impossible to escape. Its windows are barred, its guards are armed, and its exterior walls are whitewashed so any escaping prisoner can be seen before he reaches freedom.
But Rose sees what others have stopped looking for: weakness in the building itself.
Beneath Libby lies a flooded cellar the prisoners call Rat Hell — a black, diseased underworld of mud, rot, darkness, and rats. While Confederate guards watch the doors, windows, and outer walls, Rose begins to believe the only way out is down. With the help of a small circle of desperate officers, he turns scraps of tin, broken spoons, stolen moments, and sheer will into a tunnel.
As the tunnel slowly claws its way beneath the prison, suspicion grows. Captain Turner, the disciplined Confederate officer in charge, senses something is wrong. Corporal Dent, crueler and more obsessive, begins circling Rose and the old stove that conceals the entrance. Collapses, sickness, hunger, and panic threaten to destroy the plan before it can reach open ground. When the prisoners finally break through beneath an abandoned shed outside the prison walls, hope becomes more dangerous than fear.
On the night of February 9, 1864, 109 Union officers attempt one of the most daring prison escapes of the Civil War. Some are too sick to run. Some are too afraid to crawl.
