Synopsis/Details

In the glamorous and high-stakes world of the Grand Royale Casino and Resort in Las Vegas, the sudden death of a renowned high roller, Elliot Jewel, sends shockwaves through the establishment and the city. The victim is found dead at a private poker table, clutching a peculiar antique poker chip in his hand, and appears to have died of natural causes. However, rumors exist that the chip was stolen from the famed landmark, The Mob Museum.

Enter Detective Joel Hanson. He begins to suspect foul play. A dancer in the resort’s throwback Follies show, Katlin Miller, also becomes suspicious. Katlin is among the last to see Jewel alive that night after he invites her to share champagne. When Joel meets Katlin, he soon learns that the fiery redhead has a reputation with local law enforcement for super-sleuthing. Katlin and Joel’s chemistry is immediate and undeniable. Despite his efforts to keep her away from the investigation, Katlin sees through Joel’s facade, and they work together to uncover a web of deceit. However, Katlin goes rogue. She discovers who lifted the poker chip, and Katlin and her friend, Catrina- another showgirl who claims to be an empath- visit a quirky occult shop where they discover the purchase of rattlesnake venom. Then, another high roller who is given the same suite ends up dead at the resort after consuming a Scotch from a bottle left behind by housekeeping after Jewel died.

Each clue leads to more danger; Detective Joel and Katlin must navigate the legal red tape and deduce motives as clues surface. When they discover a link between two of the casino’s employees: a singer with a penchant for acting creepy and a casino host with a hidden agenda, they know they’re getting close to solving what’s now labeled as a double homicide. They also learn that Jewel might not have been as rich as he claimed and possibly even ran a scam to get comps at the casinos. With each step and misstep, Joel and Katlin realize that the next hand could be their last in this game as the stakes rise. The climax reveals a twisted plot of desire. But, whodunnit? Is it the velvet-voiced singer known for making unwanted advances or the casino host who caters to the whales willing to risk it all? One thing is for sure: Joel can’t solve this case without the help of amateur sleuth Katlin.

"Sequins and Suspects: A High Roller Homicide" vividly portrays Las Vegas life, with enthralling, cozy mystery and unexpected turns. As Katlin and Joel's romance simmers, the odds are good they’ll join forces again to crack yet another case.

The Writer: Mary Kay LaBrie

Embarking on a screenwriting voyage over two decades ago, I've seen scripts of mine embraced with options and one tantalizingly close to production. Yet, I sought refuge in the culinary arts as Hollywood's tides turned towards a monochrome future (think endless MATRIX marathons). My pen, once devoted to crafting narratives, now conjured flavors, leading me to helm multiple cooking blogs, savor victory at The World Food Championships, and grace the pages of "Taste of Home" and "Country Woman." Journalism beckoned next, with "The Southlake Tablet" featuring my byline, followed by an invitation from Chef Anthony Lagana to infuse words with taste for "Menu Innovator." I'm the creative force… Go to bio
