A one-armed young man obsesses over becoming an astronaut after a final discussion with his girlfriend, and turns to criminal actions to fulfill his desire after the space agency rejects him.

It is an era where thousands of space shuttle launches occur every year in search of new, habitable planets for Earthlings to live, due to disastrous weather events happening on Earth brought on by over-pollution. Thousands of homeless people wander the streets, most missing limbs from infection and from fighting in the Laser War decades earlier.

A young, one-armed, African-Canadian man named DONNY SPRAT has struggled all his life forming romantic relationships. Until he meets the girl of his dreams, LAUREN DOE. They quickly fall in love. Donny tells his father, FRANCIS, who has been struggling himself the past three decades, over past mistakes he’s made and the lives he’s taken since enlisting at the age of fifteen to fight in the Laser War. On the night before Donny’s graduation, Donny and Lauren make love for the first time, and Donny’s father commits suicide by piloting his fishing boat in an intense storm.

Donny spirals into a deep depression, and Lauren tries to cheer him up by signing them up for a vacation at a beach resort. On the drive there, Lauren spots a rocket launching in the distance, and she suggests Donny becomes an astronaut. They decide they both will go into outer space together. A truck trailing a medium-sized fishing boat turns in front of Donny’s car and Donny loses composure. He attempts to pass the driver of the pickup truck.

Donny wakes up in the hospital, and learns he and Lauren got in an accident with the other driver. Lauren died. Donny becomes even more depressed. He remembers the promise he made to Lauren moments before she died. Donny signs up for the Vancouver Astronaut Academy, and begins studying like never before.

Donny arrives at the academy, and due to his determination soon becomes a top student there. The stress from his workload forces Donny to get hooked on a new medication called ‘Chewies’, said to reduce feelings of sadness and heartache, while giving its user extreme focus. Donny presents his final term thesis, detailing that he has potentially located a string of planets similar to Earth in a far away galaxy. Donny concludes he is the best and only choice for the mission to seek out these habitable planets and prove their existence. Donny is thanked for his presentation, and is told he will receive a response from the academy in six months time.

Six months later, Donny is sent a letter telling him he was rejected by the academy and won’t be going to outer space. Donny enters a fit of rage, then calms himself by popping some ‘Chewie’ pills. The next day he goes to the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and asks why he wasn’t selected to become an astronaut. The CSA employee tells Donny it’s because he is missing his left arm. Donny makes it his mission to purchase a new working arm. Donny wakes from a nightmare and sees on his TV an ad for a new artificial limb device, the Arti-Limb, that is made up of an indestructible red, velvety fabric. It is almost within his price range. While Donny contemplates how he will raise enough money to afford the limb device, he spots two crooks rob a convenience store across from his apartment.

Donny locates the two robbers, BLADE and REV, and makes them an offer. Donny plans on robbing six banks in six months, and says they can keep most of the cash. The two criminals agree to help Donny. The three law-breakers equip themselves with old, dirty, and tattered clothes, Halloween masks, and guns. A pistol for Donny, and two war-era laser guns for Blade and Rev. The three of them successfully rob five banks, posing as homeless people.

The sixth and final bank they attempt to rob becomes surrounded by police officers before the crooks have time to escape. The bank guard manages to get his gun back from Blade and he fires it at Rev, and misses. Rev shoots the guard with a laser from his gun, leaving a hole in his stomach for his guts to spill out, while also dismembering the arm of a young boy there with his mother. Donny escorts the mother and her wounded boy out of the bank, then he retaliates by shooting off Rev’s legs. While the majority of the police force leaves to deal with a homeless uprising, Donny, Blade, and Rev make their escape.

Donny takes his portion of the loot, goes and buys himself an Arti-Limb device, then goes back to the Canadian Space Agency. Donny is still denied by the employee since the limb device he has on has been known to malfunction. Donny becomes so enraged that he backhands the CSA worker across the side of his face using his artificial arm, which knocks his head off. A security guard rushes in and tries to shoot Donny, who shields himself with the employee’s severed body. Donny then pitches the body at the guard, smooshing both of them into pulp against the concrete wall. A notification rings out through the building’s intercom, stating there will be a rocket launch in twenty minutes.

Donny attempts to hijack the rocket, though the three astronauts are prepared and try to shoot him with guns. Donny leaps behind cover, then he feels immense pain in his chest. A pain so intense he yells out. Donny opens his bottle of ‘Chewies’ and pops almost all of them into his mouth and chews. Donny’s heart beats faster, and faster. It beats so fast and fills with so much blood that it explodes, and Donny’s veins fill up with extra thick blood. Donny dies.

The astronauts enter the rocket and climb up long ladders up to the flight deck. A tiny needle within Donny’s Arti-Limb pierces his flesh and enters a vein. It draws his thick blood, causing the red fabric to not only wrap around thin air to form his arm, it also wraps around Donny’s entire body. Donny’s body starts to move, then the limb device forces him onto his feet. He enters the rocket seconds before lift-off.

Donny climbs up to the flight deck as the rocket is about to reach Earth’s atmosphere. Donny punches through the helmet and face of the first astronaut, leaving a crater in his head. Donny tears off the second astronaut’s helmet, then his head along with his spinal cord. Donny lets go of them and they drop down to the bottom portion of the rocket, smashing into a misty cloud of blood and bone. Before Donny can kill the third astronaut, she unbuckles and drops herself down to the back of the flight deck. Right before the rocket exits Earth’s atmosphere, the remaining astronaut causes the rocket to explode. Fiery bits and pieces of the rocket, and Donny’s fabric-encased dead body, rain over the city.
