As the holidays approach, New York City park ranger Jessica is transferred to Ravenwood, a remote town upstate. Her assignment: train Spencer - local handyman and renegade - to become a ranger at Ravenwood Park.

Jessica Walker has loved nature ever since she was a lonely little girl living in Ohio. Nature was her escape. Her solace. Her best friend. A trip to Yellowstone with her parents only strengthened this bond. She knew then that she wanted to return to Yellowstone one day and work there and teach people about nature. It became her dream.

Unfortunately, her dream hasn't panned out. Instead, at age 33, Jessica works as a ranger at an urban park in New York City. It’s not a bad job. She’s good at what she does. She’s passionate and full of knowledge. And she connects people with nature on a daily basis. But something’s missing.

One day Jessica’s boss informs her that she is being temporarily transferred to Ravenwood Park, a remote park in upstate New York. Ravenwood is suddenly without a ranger, and Jessica has been chosen to go there for the remainder of December to train a ranger candidate for the position.

Upon arriving in Ravenwood, Jessica is bombarded by the town’s Christmas cheer. Having had some unpleasant memories of Christmases past, the holidays have never been her cup of tea. She immediately contends with a Christmas shopping jaywalker and then the local handyman, Spencer, whose vehicle takes up two parking spaces. Being a stickler for the rules, Ranger Jessica is not impressed.

Jessica then arrives at the rustic ranger residence that will be her temporary home. It’s scenic. Peaceful. There’s snow. A fireplace. She’s pleasantly surprised. She can do this, she tells herself. It’s only for a couple of weeks.

Moments after changing into her ranger uniform, Jessica’s tranquility is broken by the roar of a chainsaw. Alarmed, she marches into the woods and finds Spencer – yes, him again – cutting down a Christmas tree on park property. So she scolds him and whips out her citation booklet.

Jessica then hears a commotion back at the ranger residence, where she finds a group of locals setting up the town’s Christmas festival in her front yard. It seems this is a Ravenwood tradition. Outraged, she whips out her citation booklet yet again.

Irritated, Jessica heads back inside the ranger residence for some peace and quiet – only to find the local Santa and two elves, Tinsel and Fa-la-la, setting up a "Photos with Santa" booth in her living room. Yes, even Santa and his elves aren't safe from Jessica’s onslaught of citations.

Finally Jessica meets her new trainee: Spencer. Mr. Two Parking Spaces. Mr. Tree Cutter. He is the person she must train for the next two weeks and prepare him to become the new chief ranger at Ravenwood Park. But he will get the job only if Jessica gives him a passing grade, and he’s off to a rocky start.

The training sessions begin, and Jessica shows him what it takes to become a ranger. The determined Spencer gives it his all, but it’s slow going as he lacks experience, knowledge and discipline. Jessica senses that he’s not cut out for the job.

Soon Jessica meets Spencer’s mother, who runs the local Christmas shop. And his daughter, who's instantly drawn to Jessica and decides she wants to become a park ranger, too. Jessica slowly warms to Spencer, and they begin to enjoy their time together hiking and talking and learning – and bonding.

Jessica ultimately comes to cherish her time in Ravenwood. She creates a popular nature exhibit for the town’s Christmas festival, and she gets to experience her first traditional Christmas since she was a little girl. But as she and Spencer grow ever so closer, it begins to complicate their working relationship – and their future plans.
