The novel "Chasing the Devil's Tail"
A tale of murder, music, and madness set in turn-of-the-century New Orleans.

Storyville, New Orleans, 1907. In this raucous quarter, where two thousand scarlet women ply their trade, where rye whiskey flows like an amber river, and cocaine and morphine are sold over the counter, there’s a killer on the loose, murdering prostitutes and madams and leaving a black rose with each body.
Creole detective Valentin St. Cyr is brought in to work the case and as he unravels the mystery, we meet a cast of characters, some fictional, others drawn from history that never made it into schoolbooks: Tom Anderson, known as “The King of Storyville”; Justine, the “soiled dove” who becomes Valentin’s paramour; Lulu White, the famed madam who later inspired Mae West; E. J. Bellocq, the tormented cripple who photographs the Storyville whores; the young piano player who goes by the moniker Jelly Roll Morton; and, finally, Valentin’s childhood friend Buddy Bolden, the genius who is creating America’s original music and losing his mind at the same time.
One after another wanton woman falls. As the count rises, Bolden finds himself at the wrong place at the wrong time, and becomes the prime suspect, even as he lights up the nights with his wild jass and wilder antics, all fueled by drink and drugs, a narrative of self-destruction that has been repeated for over a century.
Over six-episodes, the story rushes to a violent and tragic climax that puts the lives of all the characters and the only legally-sanctioned red-light district in American history hanging in the balance. .
