Audrina Coleman dumps a body into the cold waters of Cazenovia Lake in Upstate NY, returns home to have a dinner with her best friend and childhood crush, Greyson Knight, only to flee town moments later with seemingly no explanation. A heavy mist however, clouds her vision and, Audrina, after hitting a pothole in the road, crashes her car and wakes up seemingly unharmed and back on the road. Audrina drives forward and soon finds herself back in her hometown of Fayetteville, NY, expect, that it's empty, devoid of all life, while a thick fog hangs over the sky like a blanket. Audrina's car breaks down, and, soon realizing that she needs help, begins searching for her boyfriend Daniel, which leads her into the local bar where she discovers Daniel's friend. Peter, turned into a nightmarish creature with hollow, large black eyes. Greyson soon arrives, subdues Peter, and tells Audrina he was looking for while also revealing the entire town's population has become just like Peter, creatures straight out of Audrina's anatomy textbooks. After noticing some strange changes in Greyson, notably, the disappearance of his unique highlights, the two begin retracing Daniel's steps which leads them to the local bank where they find Audrina's friend Dana, who, after telling them Daniel tried to kill her, tries to kill Audrina, in an effort to preserve her "relationship" with Daniel. Greyson knocks her out and the two quickly escape to the local library where Greyson tries to get Audrina to let off some steam. His antics only end up annoying her and the two eventually leave and soon begin butting heads. After Greyson blows off Audrina's suspicions of an affair with Carrie, one of the librarians at the library, the two part ways, Greyson to the local Target in search for books and Audrina back to her house to find Daniel. She eventually does, but to her horror, he threatens her, admits to almost killing Dana, and reveals that he knew about Audrina's trip to the lake. Audrina escapes, meets back up with Greyson at the Target, and soon finds her way into the local church where she decides to reveal her secrets to Father Malcolm, the local pastor. Audrina feeling betrayed her husband's affair with Dana, rejects him and forces Greyson to do his own confession. There, we learn that Greyson is the one keeping Audrina in what appears to be purgatory. With instructions by Father Malcolm, Audrina and Greyson escape the church and, after Greyson fails to tell Audrina the truth, he whisks her away to their local middle school to clear the air. After a strange encounter with one of Audrina's old teachers, Greyson finds herself at the tip of Audrina's blade and confesses to having sex with Carrie. She stabs him, flees, and soon finds herself reunited with a much more sane Daniel who tells her how to escape. After confronting several glimpses of her past, Audrina finds herself, once again, reunited with Greyson. The two return to the library where they are confronted by Daniel and Audrina's mother, Margaret. Greyson, in a fit of rage, refuses to let go, and kills both of them. As punishment, he transforms into a demon, much to Audrina's shock. The pair, realizing they've gone to far, finally relent and, after a battle with a horde of monsters, find themselves back at the church where Audrina finally confronts her sins. She stabs Greyson, takes him to the lake, and lays him to rest, freeing her from her nightmare. Back in the real world, one month later, Audrina finds out Daniel orchestrated the whole event and tips off the police who have him, and his two accomplices, Dana, and Carrie arrested. Meanwhile in heaven, the archangel Gabriel prepares a special assignment for the newly appointed angel, Greyson, one that have more than a few strings attached.
