Thirty-one years after the collapse of civilization, the world has become a place of silence, hunger, and unnatural evolution.
In the year 2055, Daniel Hayes, now sixty-eight, moves alone through the overgrown ruins of Appalachia. Once a National Park Service ranger, Hayes has spent decades surviving on the surface after a catastrophic ecological event transformed the natural world into something predatory and intelligent. The forests have reclaimed highways and towns, but worse than the wilderness itself are the creatures that now move through it — wolves, coyotes, and other predators exhibiting coordinated behavior far beyond anything natural.
While fleeing a pack through the Blue Ridge foothills, Hayes discovers a heavily fortified underground settlement hidden beneath a former water treatment facility: Haven Annex 7, a sealed colony that has managed to survive the apocalypse underground for over three decades. Inside are 314 survivors, including families, children, teachers, security staff, and a governing council led by the composed and enigmatic Councilor Wren Adisa.
Hayes is brought inside and immediately realizes something is wrong.
The colony appears orderly and safe, sustained by hydroponic agriculture and cultivated protein vats, but beneath its surface lies an atmosphere of control, rationing, and secrecy. People disappear quietly. Food shortages are mounting. Security chief Osei monitors increasingly disturbing anomalies along the perimeter. Adisa seems deeply interested in Hayes’s decades of field notes — a battered notebook documenting the beginning of the collapse and the behavior of the creatures outside.
The story then unfolds across two interwoven timelines.
In 2024, Hayes is a younger ranger in rural West Virginia, still living in the shadow of personal tragedy after the death of his wife Claire and young son. When local farmers begin reporting bizarre disturbances — fences opened without livestock taken, wildlife migration patterns shifting unnaturally, and predators moving in coordinated formations — Hayes begins investigating what initially appears to be isolated animal incidents.
As the evidence mounts, Hayes discovers that wolves, coyotes, and even solitary predators like bobcats are gathering together peacefully, all moving with a shared directional purpose.
Working alongside veterinarian Dr. Ruth Callan, Hayes uncovers the first biological evidence that something unprecedented is happening. Captured wolves display strange blood anomalies, unknown protein sequences, appetite suppression, and increasingly unnatural intelligence. Animals are no longer behaving according to species instinct. Instead, they appear to be learning, communicating, and possibly organizing.
The horror escalates when Hayes encounters a wolf pack in the forest that does not attack him, but instead observes him with chilling awareness before retreating into the trees.
In the present-day 2055 timeline, those early warnings have evolved into a nightmare reality.
At Haven Annex 7, fresh markings begin appearing on the colony’s northeast perimeter fence — deliberate grid-like scratches made during the night. Security investigates and discovers a terrifying truth: beyond the fence line, deep within the fog-covered forest, a large pack of creatures stands motionless in the darkness, watching the colony.
They are not hunting.
They are waiting.
As Hayes begins to realize the same threat he witnessed at the beginning of the collapse has now found Haven Annex 7, the pilot ends with the predators massing outside the walls, their howls rising from every direction around the bunker.
The series follows Hayes as he attempts to uncover the origin of the collapse, expose the secrets within Haven Annex 7, and stop the intelligent predators from breaching the last refuge of humanity — all while confronting his own guilt over failing to prevent the catastrophe when it first began.
