In 2019, Nito watches videos recorded by his deceased older brother Rogelio when he was in high school, painting him as someone who was seen as a fun guy by everyone. In 2004, we see this wasn’t the case. Rogelio is bullied by Antonio. His best and only friend Lois helps him out of trouble, including his bad grades. She invites him to go see a meteor shower in White Sands, New Mexico and he accepts. In 2019, Nito wishes he could’ve met Rogelio and tries to be like him. Conversely, he is completely distanced from his duties as a high school sophomore and from the people around him, including his parents Grecia and Joaquin. In both 2004 and 2019 there’s a meteor shower that leaves meteor pieces in both Rogelio’s and Nito’s bedrooms in their respective years.
The next morning they wake up and realize they have done a body switch across fifteen years: Rogelio is in Nito’s body, and Nito is in Rogelio’s body. From now on, we’ll refer to Rogelio as Rogelio/Nito and Nito as Nito/Rogelio. Adult Lois, now a teacher of Nito, reveals to Rogelio/Nito that he died in a car accident when he was on the way to see the meteor shower with Lois. Both brothers manage to communicate via video calls. They decide they will stop Rogelio’s death. Nito/Rogelio tries to hitch a ride with the younger Lois but she has to lend her car to her mom. He finally decides to simply not go, leaving younger Lois out in the desert.
Rogelio stays alive, but both brothers see that they’re still in each other’s bodies and times. Adult Lois helps them to solve the situation but soon realizes something: The universe is collapsing. Regardless, both brothers use the opportunity to bond with each other, just as Rogelio/Nito opts to spend time with his parents. Meanwhile, Nito/Rogelio’s idea of the past starts to fall apart as he faces bullying from Antonio. But this attempt at self-defense ends up badly injuring younger Lois.
Rogelio/Nito gets furious at Nito/Rogelio for hurting Lois and not apologizing for not showing up in White Sands. Nito/Rogelio claims he did it because he was too embarrassed. But the younger Lois shows up in Rogelio’s house and tells Nito/Rogelio that she had a crush on him, but he was too dumb to see it. Nito/Rogelio realizes that Rogelio has been a bad friend to Lois. Both brothers argue and lose contact with each other. But strange events such as objects and people disappearing, TV and radio signals getting mixed signal the imminent collapse of the universe.
Adult Lois urges Rogelio/Nito to make things right with Nito/Rogelio. They make amends and believe that the meteors on their bedrooms must be united in White Sands during the next meteor shower. In 2004, Nito/Rogelio attempts to amend his friendship with the younger Lois so they can go together but she refuses. He decides to drive there even though he doesn’t know how. In 2019, adult Lois tries to drive Rogelio/Nito there, but his parents are too suspicious of this relationship between them and refuse to let him go. So he steals their car. He encounters the younger Lois there but promises to leave her alone.
The meteor shower strikes but the body and time swap doesn’t happen. Instead, the shower injures both brothers and the adult Lois in their respective times. The younger Lois rescues Nito/Rogelio. An ambulance and the parents save Rogelio/Nito and the older Lois. But along the way, the paramedics and the parents disappear. Rogelio/Nito takes Lois to the hospital and she tells him to go to his computer. In 2004, Nito/Rogelio reveals he’s Nito to his parents and the younger Lois. They don’t believe him at first but Lois confirms his clues. They go to the house and across both years, the brothers believe that simply being on White Sands uninterrupted will bring them back to their times and bodies. As the universe collapses, they manage to make it to White Sands. Both siblings say goodbye to their parents, Lois and to each other. All the changes they’ve made become undone. Rogelio accepts his fate and lets himself die on the accident. Although he grieves his brother, Nito realizes he must make his own way in life. He decides to join the Model UN club at his school and to be a better student and son. All as he and his parents fondly remember and honor Rogelio.
