In the dead of night, a man plummets to his death from the top of the towering TRINISYS BUILDING. Across town, a college professor named JACK SOLOMON loses another battle to the demons of booze and writer's block. A one-time author with a knack for throwing darts, he is a man struggling to come to terms with the reality of his own self-worth. This frustration leads to a public altercation with one of his students, DANNY MILLER. When Miller winds up dead the next morning, Jack's world flies apart. He finds himself being led away in handcuffs by a dispassionate detective named CASTILLANOS, accused of cold-blooded murder.

A virtual-reality headset used to experience the internet like never before, it threatens to take the country by storm. Backed by SENATOR RUSSELLS, a political powerhouse with eyes on the presidency, the company's fanatical promotion of the product is watched with keen interest by SARAH HARPER. A reporter with beauty as well as brains, Sarah uncovers an unlikely connection between Jack and the man who fell to his death in the opening. It was the man's son whom Jack is accused of killing.
