Ounce of Prevention
A young couple chased by zombies attempts to escape with an abandoned car, but first, a little maintenance is needed.
Ever wonder how an actual zombie outbreak would play out? Not the 28 Days, Weeks, Months, Years or maybe Decades Later kind. No, the classic George Romero shuffling breed of zombie. ‘Cause when you’re deceased, reflexes tend to not be all that sharp. And with eternal rotting life ahead of you, really, where’s the rush?
Though, in Zom-Com (zombie comedy) short Ounce of Prevention, protagonists Jeremy and Lori ARE in a rush. When we meet them, they’re running for their lives. At least at first.
But – inevitably, due to horror universe rules – Lori stumbles and hurts her leg. So now the couple’s limping urgently towards a barn.
Once inside, the two beeline for an old car; surely their only chance to survive. That’s if they can fire the engine up. AFTER they climb in. Pretty quickly, reality and lax time constraints sink in for the desperate duo. Because – let’s face it – the zombies hunting them won’t be winning any Olympic sprinter medals soon.
EXT. FIELD - NIGHT
The Zombies keep on shufflin’. Every day they’re shufflin’. Closer and closer…
Soon after:
Jeremy rushes to the driver’s side, puts the key in and unlocks it. He climbs in and sits in the driver’s seat.
LORI
Jeremy!
JEREMY
Yeah?
She pulls the handle several times.
LORI
Unlock the door!
JEREMY
Oh, right!
He presses a button just as Lori pulls the handle.
LORI
It’s still locked!
JEREMY
Just wait. You can’t pull the
handle while I unlock it or it won’t work.
We’ve all experienced that time consuming (not brain consuming) scenario, right?
And it’s about to get even more comedically frustrating. After all, you gotta put GAS in a car. And having functioning spark plugs. Lori should also REALLY snap on that seat belt, while Jeremy checks the oil. Ummmm….
You’d think such precautions are “over-kill”. But it’s not like there’s no time to spare. Classic zombies make SLOTHS look like steroid enhanced Cheetas...
Will Lori and Jeremy make it out alive? Will they die of boredom first? Or will the glacier-speed tenacity of hungry – albeit speed-challenged - zombies score them a human meal?
