Hello all,

Recently, I watched a few videos from Craig, @thebeardedscreenwriter, who posts on this site. Who are some of the other folks you enjoy watching to get tips and tricks and guidance on your screenwriting journey?

Thanks,

Lee Jessup is a career coach for writers and has been posting "Screenwriting Career Nugget" videos weekly for the past eight months. You can find them on YouTube or her website: leejessup.com. They're only 4-6 minutes each, which isn't a huge time commitment.

Andrea,

Thanks. I have seen a few clips of her on film courage videos, but I'll check out her site and solo videos. Much appreciated.

I can vouch for Craig as being a good source of information, but make sure to do your due diligence on who's dishing out advice. The screenwriting world is full of people with little to no credentials telling people how to succeed, and YouTube is a whole layer of Dunning Kruger effect on top of that.

CJ,

Yeah, I've watched and read a lot over the past year about screenwriting and have seen many decent tidbits repeated in many ways, but overall there seems to be a lot of filler/bad advice thrown on top. I'm trying to sift through and understand how other writers feel about the process. Never easy (as in music or painting etc.) as chunks of it are subjective, but I'm always curious to learn.

You'll be lucky to find writers who talk about this artform as anything other than a job. The term artistry is sadly almost a swear word.

There's a few red flags with people giving advice that you have to watch out for:

  1. A dogmatic tone. Anyone claiming you must do something a certain way, all the time, tends to be someone who only ever believes their way is the best. Sometimes, they'll SHOUT their POINT all the way HOME because they get a kick out of scolding others. Often, they'll present advice in the formula of "you must always do X, with some exceptions," which contradicts itself. They also tend to say people can't write like pros, because the pros tend to not follow their particular rules.
  2. Sycofants. There's a lot of critics/gurus who love putting down the unknown/uncool and waxing lyrical over what's acceptable. They use a lot of words like "perfect", "genius", "masterpiece", and "magnus opus". They don't really appreciate the real world and how things come about. They don't accept chance has ever played a part. They discredit the impact team members have on the results that fall under a director's name.
  3. Superficial obsession. This for me is the most common red flag. People who talk about little else but formatting, rules, typos, how pages look, and even feel. They are focused on these micro issues, most of which are debatable anyway, because they haven't really studied the craft beyond being able to mark scripts like homework.

I created my own YouTube account profile and established it as a method to document my screenwriting journey. It still remains blank. I follow content creators and vlogs based on individual unique styles and philosophies. The users who I follow vlog about culture and family perspectives--  philsophies which I believe might prove useful in our filming journey.

Although, in all actuality, I have already shared an entire script with a young debut film director with an incredible perspective and dynamic presence and three incredibly fabulous young actresses who I discovered through Youtube and personally believe have the ability to turn a script into a feature film that can prove to be every bit as poignant and influential as anything viewers have seen.

CJ,

Thanks and yep, those three catagories are rampant throughout youtube and other sites. Anytime I'm told it has to be done one specific way with no wiggle room and that formula and structure are the only thing that matter, I check out from the conversation.

I understand looking at projects as a job to a certain extent, in that you have to put in the work, learn how to improve, and keep at it, but there's so much more to creating a good end result.
