Synopsis/Details
Lacking any direction outside of his lowly finance job and smoking pot with his friends, LUKE (30's) is living in New York City and headed absolutely nowhere, fast. Until one day, he receives a package from a strange delivery driver, FRANCIS. Inside is a Magic 8 Ball, in all it's cheap, novelty glory.
Except when he makes a wish, it comes true. Then another. And another. By shaking the ball until he gets his desired answer, he discovers he can shape reality in any way he wants - but the ball has different ideas. It perverts the wishes of the asker, taking them either too literally or without any concern for the global repercussions of the whims of the burnouts.
When Luke's friends PRESTON and MATT get wise to Luke's newfound powers, they decide to make a few wishes of their own - a private island society for the former, a trillion dollars for the latter. The combination of the newly created wealth and a mysterious island appearing off the Eastern Seaboard sends the economy into freefall. When Luke seeks to reverse their wishes with one of his own, the discover the Magic 8 Ball has disappeared - stolen by Francis.
Francis begins to make wish after wish as they try to hunt him down, leading to utter chaos as Luke and his friends strive to undo the ever-increasing global damage done by their absent-minded pulling at the strings of reality itself.
Finally, they retrieve the arcane artifact, all having learned the true value of themselves and the importance of working hard for things, rather than having them drop into one's lap with a shake of the ball. Well, maybe not - but at least they can slack in peace once more.
