Synopsis/Details
When Jamie walks through the door of the Humane Society, it's not just an animal who needs rescuing that day. Tom is there to adopt another service dog into the Canine Comrade Corps, but it's Jamie his heart goes out to. But each man turns away, walks away, from the potential pain, the rejection, the knowledge that it'll all end in tears... Jamie knows damn well that the HIV he contracted from an unfaithful lover has put him out of the dating game forever in the small town of Santa Vera. Tom lost his legs in Afghanistan, and got new ones, yeah, but with a side order of PTSD to go, he thought grimly. The real problem is that only now does he realize he's gay, now that the revelation would be just one too many things to put his family through, after everything else they've had to deal with. So both men grin and bear the loneliness, put their feelings on a shelf, even as Jamie's volunteer stint at CCC turns into friendship and, despite their resolve, something more... WeScreenplay feedback (incorporated in this version)
Score: 7.8

This script was a thoroughly enjoyable read from start to finish. It’s well crafted, with deep, unique characters, and a compelling, emotional romance at its center. What makes Jamie and Tom especially interesting as protagonists is that their internal conflicts and reservations for not wanting to fully open themselves to the possibilities of romance are well-defined, believable, and grounded in
reality. These two men feel like real people going through challenges in life.

MARKETABILITY: HIGH
With two strong, complex protagonists, this script has a lot of marketing appeal. It has a unique point of view and
a strong message. It would probably garner an R rating, which feels right for the story, since it’s not a sunshineand-
rainbows romantic comedy. Making it edgier allows for more substantial exploration of love and intimacy. The way
it’s written, it would also be easy to produce, with only a few locations and no major set pieces.

OVERALL: CONSIDER
This is a strong consider, and not far from a recommend. The only thing missing from this script is a lack of conflict at times, which makes for uneven story momentum. You have demonstrated clear writing ability, and this script is loaded to the brim with potential. Keep up the good work!

The Writer: Brad Vance

I'm the author of over a dozen novels as Brad Vance and Orland Outland (my legal name, which sounds like what someone once called my "preposterous pseudonym"). My screenplay adaptation of my novel, A Little Too Broken, has quarterfinaled in the 2017 Shore Scripts Feature and 2017 Screencraft Drama comps, and is currently a semifinalist in the WeScreenplay Diverse Voices contest. I've finished production on the first episode of my web series, Crunch , a dark comedy about the housing crisis that's come along with Reno's tech boom. And the next episode is in preproduction! I'm in preproduction on The Red Stuff , a dystopian look at 2030 through the eyes of two young documentary filmmakers. I… Go to bio
