Synopsis/Details
Synopsis of Age of Magic Episode 1:
Age of Magic follows Selene, a young peasant woman whose life is transformed by the arrival of a mysterious traveler. Set in a dark medieval world filled with magic, mystery, and intrigue, Episode 1 establishes a foreboding atmosphere that sets the stage for an epic battle between light and dark forces.
Opening Sequence:
The story begins on a quiet rural farm where Selene and her family live a simple, isolated life. On a trip to the village market, a brief encounter with a stranger unnerves Selene’s mother, Leanore, who hastily insists they leave. On their way home, the family is attacked by a monstrous beast, resulting in the brutal slaughter of Leanore and Selene’s siblings. Selene and her emotionally distant father are the only survivors.
Four Years Later:
Now a young woman, Selene remains on the farm with her distant father, hardened by the trauma of her family’s death. A mysterious traveler, Lawrence, arrives at the farm seeking work. Lawrence bears an unsettling resemblance to Selene’s deceased brother, stirring discomfort and curiosity within her.
Strange events soon begin to unfold. One night, after a surreal encounter with Lawrence, Selene is plunged into a nightmarish vision where she is attacked by the same beast that killed her family. The next morning, Lawrence has vanished. Unsure whether it was all a dream, Selene is left questioning reality.
Months pass, and Selene finds herself inexplicably pregnant. Her father, enraged by her condition, accuses her of frolicking with Lawrence and throws her out of their home. Alone and confused, Selene wanders the countryside.
Selene is eventually found by Old Nell, a kindly old crone who offers her shelter in a colorful gypsy wagon. Despite Old Nell’s care and hospitality, Selene begins to suspect something is wrong. They travel through a vast forest, haunted by the same monstrous beast that slaughtered her family and appears in her nightmares.
Their journey leads them to a secluded cottage by a wide river with a view of Isleton Castle, home of the Duke of Southreach. Selene stays at the cottage as her pregnancy progresses, but as her fear of Old Nell grows, she attempts to flee. Her escape is short-lived as the beast chases her back to the safety of the cottage.
The Beast and Dark Magic:
The following morning, Selene goes into labor, and Old Nell reveals herself as Lawrence, who, in turn, reveals his true identity—Barnabus the Black, an ancient and cruel warlock. Barnabus explains that Selene’s mother, Leanore, was a powerful witch and that Selene comes from a long line of magic-wielders. Her grandfather is the legendary Edmund Langstaff, a mystical figure from the past.
Barnabus reveals his plan: Selene is carrying his new form, and once she gives birth, he intends to swap his newborn form with the Duke of Southreach’s son, who is being born at the same time in Isleton Castle. Barnabus will raise Selene's child in secret and eventually take over the kingdom.
After Selene gives birth to Barnabus’ new form, Barnabus turns into a shadow and leaves with the newborn to execute his plan. Exhausted and horrified, Selene is left to face the monstrous beast, which approaches her in the cottage. In a desperate moment, Selene remembers a magical song her mother used to sing, invoking a powerful protective spell cast by her grandfather. The spell saves her, and she vanishes from the cottage.
The scene shifts to Isleton Castle, where Barnabus swaps the Duke’s newborn son with his own and disappears into the river below with the infant.
The Pirate Ship:
Selene awakens aboard a pirate ship, Mathilde, on the far side of the world. There, she meets Captain Zola, a charming and roguish pirate known as the Serpent of the Seas. Over dinner, Zola reveals that he was given a magical coin four hundred years ago by Edmund Langstaff and told to sail the seas, awaiting a stowaway in his ship’s hold. That stowaway is Selene.
Zola explains that his mission is to take Selene to Port Umbralis, the Veiled City, and deliver her to a place where the scent of cinnamon is strongest.
The episode concludes with Selene determined to make the journey despite her mistrust of Zola. She vows to avenge her family’s deaths and confront Barnabus the Black.
