In 1980s England, Nigel Moorhouse, a former salesman who lost his job, maintains a fake office to hide his unemployment from his wife Tamara. When she discovers his deception and mounting debts, she throws him out. Desperate and homeless, Nigel encounters Anna, a Polish prostitute, and through her meets Fabien Boycott, a dangerous local criminal. Fabien sets up Nigel growing marijuana in a hidden bunker, leading him into a dark criminal world. After making significant money, Nigel attempts to flee with his daughter to America but is caught and imprisoned. Upon release three years later, he discovers Anna, whom he had developed feelings for, is being held captive by Fabien for a snuff film. Nigel attempts to rescue her with help from two of Fabien's associates, but in the final confrontation, both Nigel and Fabien kill each other. The story ends tragically with a drugged Anna taking her own life. The screenplay explores themes of desperation, criminality, and doomed romance against the backdrop of a gritty English town.
