Synopsis/Details
Jamaica 1793. MISS EMMA aka NANA lives a charmed life with her with 'simple' white half brother Johanne. She dream of being and English Queen. She has no knowledge of her black heritage. Nana's guardian and plantation cook MISS MARTHA, tries to teach her about her Maroon heritage. Nana ignores her. Maroon leader, CUDJOE leads an attack on Good Hope and murders Nana's doting father, plantation owner DADDY THARP Tharp. Miss Martha disappears. Black reverend SOLOMON THARP tries to console her, but she vows revenge. Overseer, ANGUS plunges her into slavery. Reverend Sharpe demands she be freed. Angus has him severely beaten and thrown into the swamp. Nana is given the very worst jobs to do. She continues to resist. Punished, she is hung from the Cottonwood Tree with many slave and Maroon corpses. A dying Maroon helps her to cut herself free. Nana escapes up into the in the rainforest. The British give chase. Nana kills her first Redcoat and slips away. She follows a Maroon troop into the mountains, but is captured and taken up to Nanny Town. Nana is reunited with Miss Martha and the disfigured Sharpe. Nana attacks Cudjoe but is defeated. Chastened, Nana begins her journey of understanding Maroon ways and has to come to terms her father's atrocities. Cudjoe inspires her develop her fighting skills. Nana embraces her roots. She impresses in an attack on Bay Hill Biolery. Cudjoe and her go off in search of the fabled Nanny's treasure. Cudjoe is killed by Redcoat, CAPTAIN ALLEN. Miss Martha’s shamanic visions reveals Nana’s mother’s story and Nana's leadership prophecy. Sharpe tries to persuade her to choose a passive christian path. Nana rejects the idea. She leads the Maroons in a final battle. Sharpe is murdered by Captain Allen. Nana dispatches Captain Allen and the British are defeated and driven out of Nanny Town and over a cliff. Angus lures Nana, back to Good Hope Nana by hanging Johanne from the Cottonwood tree. Angus and Nana fight hand to hand. She fatally wounds Angus who is then devoured by his dogs. A hurricane hits. Rising resplendent out of the ruins of Great Hope, Great House and gleaming in Queen Nanny's treasure, Queen Nana of the Maroons dominates the peace treaty signing with the British. She leads her people back up into the mountains and to freedom.

The reasons why as white man I was inspired to write 'Black Queen'? I wrote the screenplay as an apology for my direct plantation-owning ancestor's involvement in slavery. As an inner city Expressive Arts teacher there were few if any positive resources that informed us about the slaves and their pivotal role in ending slavery. When I did my own research and I was captivated by the story of Queen Nanny of the Maroons - her resistance, the communities she built and how she defeated the British Army. This material was the focus of my lessons. My step daughter is a black actress. I wrote the script for her. She has very few opportunities to play a costume drama.
