Synopsis/Details
The story of Brokenhearted Magic centers around Maria, a sheltered Mexican-American teenager who, at the age of 10, watches an all-woman magic show that instills in her a passion for the craft. After Maria's mother dies, her relationship with her strict father dwindles over the years. She moves through the colorless motions of life, until one day she sees the all-woman troupe once again and convinces them to let her join. Maria runs away from her lonely home and is launched into the fantastical world of the Ladies, each with their own array of talents, favorite swear words, and backstories. Maria's naivety quickly comes into conflict with the Ladies, but each of them helps her grow in confidence and in turn, she is able to use her use her organized mind to weave herself into the clockwork of an otherwise jumbled production, synthesizing it to new levels and winning the hearts of the Ladies. During their unending tour, the Ladies reach Las Vegas, which even in 1955 is still under the umbrella of Jim Crow. Despite being the headlining act, the Ladies aren't allowed in the casino, and must ultimately use their magic to find a way to combat segregation.
