Synopsis/Details
Jamie is a smart young woman with ambition but no direction. Like many in her city, she's lost a loved one to the pack of ghouls that attack out of nowhere and drag people away. There is seemingly nothing that can stop the monsters, or at least that's what she thinks. Two old men tell Jamie the local legend of the Krautmeister: a man who disappeared forty years earlier, who had claimed to be able to defeat such creatures. Intrigued, she goes to the last place he had been seen -- an abandoned cabbage field on the edge of town. There she is ambushed by two of the ghouls, but saved by the timely reappearance of the Krautmeister himself. The Krautmeister dispatches the monsters easily and then turns his attention to Jamie. He sees promise in her, and after a mystic encounter with a head of cabbage agrees to take her on as his apprentice. Jamie begins to learn how to create and wield magical sauerkraut, as well as this new world's attendant dangers. Her education is shaped around an investigation into the source of the monsters, their mysterious master, and the evil plot that drew the Krautmeister back out of seclusion. Between fights featuring plenty of death and flying wet cabbage, Jamie and the Krautmeister learn the location of the ghouls' nest, the fate of the missing townsfolk (being turned into slaves with leafy heads), and the existence of a dangerous Shadow Fermentation that is at the heart of it all. In the end, the master and student must face off against the ghoulish horde and their leader Ian (a master of fermentation with a shockingly expected personal connection to the Krautmeister). They must defeat the demons in their own hearts as well as the literal demons in front of them to save their town, which of course they do. There is a price to be paid, though, as the Krautmeister becomes trapped in a nether world made entirely of cabbage fighting his own doppelganger. Jamie vows to rescue her master even as she takes her place as the new Krautmeister. It's all very silly.
