Synopsis/Details
Based on a true story. ANNA KELLER (35)’s IVF daughter Cecily looks nothing like her parents, which worries her even though husband CADEN (36) says don’t borrow trouble. Across town, fragile TRACY CRANE (37) and husband ROBERT (37) dote on their own IVF baby, Gabe—also five months old and showing no family resemblance. Tracy is scarred from the loss of an infant daughter, but Robert insists Gabe is theirs and isn’t going anywhere.
At a fundraiser for the IVF clinic, Anna meets Tracy, Robert, and Tracy’s friend, GINA (32), whose baby didn’t survive premature birth. When Anna sees Gabe’s photos, she hides her shock over his resemblance to her. Later, Tracy panics to Robert because she saw the resemblance, too.
Driven by suspicion, Anna scours Tracy’s social media, which leads her to a park where Tracy shows up with Gina and Gabe. When Gina jokes that the two mothers look like they’re holding the wrong babies, Tracy leaves abruptly. Gina urges Anna to talk to the clinic if she thinks a mistake was made. Instead, Anna and Caden open Cecily’s DNA results, which confirm she is not biologically theirs.
Someone’s following Anna: it’s Robert! He claims it’s a coincidence and coos at Cecily, leaving her crying. Later, he convinces Tracy to take a DNA test, and Tracy delivers the swabs to clinic founder and fertility specialist DR. PARK (47).
At the supermarket, someone takes Cecily from her cart but returns her before Anna arrives with help. Anna finally confronts Dr. Park, who assures Anna that Gabe’s DNA test confirms his relation to Tracy and Robert. Anna is devastated, and Dr. Park heavily implies that stirring things up could have even more painful consequences. When Anna leaves, Dr. Park changes the date of Tracy Crane’s embryo transfer, so it no longer matches Gina’s; when Anna sees the date, she’s crushed—neither baby is hers. Anna lies to Gina that Dr. Park said all was fine, and she and Caden vow to keep quiet.
Soon after, a man in heavy clown makeup holds a knife to her throat and warns her to “do the right thing” about Cecily. Anna escapes and reports the assault to police; she remembers a lion tattoo.
Anna continues digging, tracking down Gina and asking who else might have transferred embryos the same day as her. Meanwhile, fearful Tracy takes Robert’s advice and gets a restraining order against Anna, then posts about Anna online, triggering a deluge of awful messages. Anna demands Dr. Park authorize a new DNA test for Gabe or face legal action, he nervously agrees. The next morning, Dr. Park is found dead.
Cecily vanishes from her crib! Anna suspects Tracy and breaks into their home searching for evidence. She overhears Robert tell someone that with Park gone, there will be no new DNA test—and Anna realizes he rigged the previous one using Cecily’s DNA to make it appear Gabe was his. Confronted, Robert confesses. He also took Cecily at the grocery store just to hold her for a minute; he swears he never meant harm.
In the grocery store parking lot, tentatively bonded Anna and Tracy hear a familiar baby cry—Cecily’s—and spot a couple at their car. The man has a lion tattoo—her attacker: it’s Jeff Hatch! When Anna realizes the disguised woman is Gina, Gina says she believes Cecily is her baby. Jeff confronted Dr. Park about a suspected mix-up and Park admitted it; during the altercation, Park fell and died. Without Dr. Park to support their claim, the Hatches took Cecily to make things right.
As Gina attacks Anna, Tracy knocks Jeff out and rescues Cecily. Gina begs Tracy to confirm Cecily is her biological daughter, but Tracy tells the truth: the DNA test Robert submitted used Cecily’s swab. Cecily is theirs. Gabe, with his fair coloring, must belong to Anna and Caden. Gina collapses in grief.
One year later, the children live with their biological families. Anna and Tracy remain close, bonded by trauma. Gina and Jeff are rebuilding—hopeful for a second chance through adoption.
