Synopsis/Details
Myra is an Italian American single mother, who's best friend is a morally flexible Columbian American Priest. Trying to balance a new relationship with an old boyfriend, Percival and her obligations to her teenage son, Oliver, has forced her to keep the relationship secret from her family. Carlos (Father Benedict) knows this is a destructive pattern for his best friend, steps over the line and invites Percival to dinner without Myra knowing. Scarlett is the only other person who knows Percival will be making an appearance, and knows Myra's wrath is not a place to enter. Myra's family's dedication to absurdity soldiers on with Babbs' flamboyant outfit, Jodie's bible belt boyfriend and a couple of DCF cases. Cousin Scarlett provides some comic relief, and scornful words, when challenged on her opinion. The kids spend most of their time outside , talking about what kid's talk about; terrible parents. Guests arrive and conversations get heated, while Carlos and Scarlett wait patiently for a very late Percival. Dinner discussion turns to a battle of morals and ethics when Jodie's boyfriend Brad learns of Carlos' (Father Benedict's) carnal appetites. The whole family accepts and defends Carlos until Brad makes the mistake of forcing Carlos to defend himself. Brad's judgement is no match for the laughter of a whole family. Carlos talks about the one who got away over espresso soaked cheesecake, and how she affirmed for him that the priesthood was his calling. This ignites empathy in Brad, letting the family see a side they might otherwise wouldn't. A notification alerts Myra to Carlos' betrayal and Scarlett immediately sells him out. Myra and Carlos argue outside about the necessity of taking the next step in her relationship with Percival. Their argument is interrupted by a phone call from Ania, a nurse and a friend who informs Myra that Percival has been in a bad car accident. Myra accidently drops her phone, speeds in her minivan to the hospital and is sent to a room where a doctor and a team on nurses couldn't save their patient. Myra is devastated and while leaving the hospital in a daze until she sees Percival in the reflection of the hospital doors. She was sent to the wrong room by a dyslexic admin. A situation that could have been avoided had she not dropped her phone and was able to get the many messages from Ania telling her Percival was fine. Back at her grandmother's house Myra bring Percival in to meet her family, and walks into a make shift dance hall where everyone is "feeling good" from the wine and the saint paper rolled joints Carlos brought along. Drunk on love, Percival proposes and Myra says yes. Which is not the answer Oliver wanted. It's just another holiday with the Cataldi family.
