Synopsis/Details
In 1987 American swimmer Lynne Cox set out to swim between the US and USSR at the Diomede Islands in the north Bering Sea. A year before the end of the Cold War, the Soviets allowed the decorated open water swimmer to make an attempt at the frigid two-and-a-quarter mile crossing. As she forges her path into history, threats of an assassination plot against her shake both nations.
US Coast Guard Captain Wes Anderson learns of the plot to kill Lynne on the day of her swim in this quirky character driven comedy. His investigation is complicated by his relationship with the wife of the USSR Commander of Big Diomede Island, his rival and counter-part amongst the Soviets. With political pressures running hot, and Lynne proving to be a difficult woman to rein in, Captain Anderson finds himself at the center of a wider intelligence gathering effort being conducted by both the CIA and KGB.
The day before the swim, Captain Anderson’s second in command goes missing, kidnapped and transported between the islands. A banquet in honor of Lynne is held on Big Diomede by the Soviets, where personal drama between the Americans and Soviets culminates in a surprising musical performance and explosive dessert.
Lynne isn’t convinced the plot against her life is real until renowned sports journalist Curtis Witherbottom, also following the threads of the mystery, doubles down on his hard line of questioning. Only then does Lynne finally admit that somebody really does want to kill her. On the day of the swim, all of the swirling puzzle pieces finally become clear, and the televised crossing gets an extra dose of lethal action.
