Michael (Mick) Irvine hunts killers for a living. However, after a case he is working on turns pear shape, mainly due to the interference of an annoying reporter, Martin Bell, Mick decides he’s had enough of chasing crazy killers. When his cover is blown, the case compromised, his colleagues and family endangered and a couple of his fingers are cut off by a machete, Mick packs his family and heads to Mount pleasant in Australia, where the biggest crimes he has to deal with are missing chickens and petty vandalism.
Living an ideal life in a safe, country town, Mick is so liked by the locals that he is awarded Community Police Officer of the year. Not wishing to draw attention to him self, Mick plays the award down and avoids the numerous advances of pretty reporter Sharon, to interview him.
However, when the Police Commissioner presenting Mick with the award finds out about his past, she’ll stop at nothing to get Mick to take over a troublesome serial killer case. Threatened with deportation, or even worse. A posting to the remote communities in the desert. Mick has little choice but to leave his family and head to the city.
Mick reluctantly takes over the investigation to catch a psychotic machete killer who suddenly changes his operandi and starts targeting reporters who write about him. As the body count rises, Mick finds him self succumbing to some of his old vices and embarks on a passionate affair with the pretty reporter Sharon, who has used her friendship with Mick as leverage to secure a job at the city paper.
After a series of frustrations and false leads, Mick and his team finally have a breakthrough using CCTV footage linked to a computer. However, Mick loses his cool when Sharon betrays his trust and an old enemy, Martin Bell shows up. Perhaps not being totally focused on his work and fuelled by anger, Mick puts his best lead into a coma after a deadly fight on board a moving train.
Clouded by anger and harbouring resentment for reporters. Mick turns his back on Sharon, unaware that the machete killer has chosen the pretty reporter as his next victim.
With the hopes of catching the killer, before he dices up his next captured victim dimming. Mick must decide whether he can pull himself together and give up his hatred if he is to have any chance of saving an endangered life.
Some wounds are not just physical. They run deeper. Much deeper. Can Mick let his wounds heal and stop the machete frenzy? Or will he too become a victim to the machete frenzy?
