Synopsis/Details
The brilliant, ingenious, young man, Gustavo Medina, is witness in Honduras to the murder of his older sister, Celia Medina, at the hands of her boyfriend, Eliecer Mejia, who is attempting to entangle her in a human trafficking ring. Ten years later, now living in Brooklyn, New York, Gustavo has to constantly grapple with this horrendous memory. Unemployed, and with the status of his political asylum application unknown, he finds solace in alcohol against his adversities. His vice does not stop short of creating havoc in his relationship with his talented and entrepreneurial girlfriend Margarita Garcia. The situation becomes so intolerable for her, that one night Gustavo comes home drunk to find a note in which she states she’s leaving him and moving to her aunt’s house in Texas to resume her university studies.
While in a bar drowning his sorrows, he meets Michael Pereira, who is very moved yet in awe of Gustavo’s sagacity and offers him a maintenance position in the hotel that he owns. At the hotel, he meets Mr. Cohen, the eccentric manager, and Neta, the beautiful receptionist with whom he connects at first sight. Weeks go by without news of Margarita and Gustavo is promoted. Meanwhile, the chemistry between him and Neta becomes so intense that they begin a romantic affair. Just when the relationship begins to get serious, Margarita returns with a child in her womb. Gustavo has no other choice but to end his relationship with Neta, whose spirit is destroyed.
Gustavo’s life appears to be moving in a new and more peaceful direction, until one day he gets called in to translate for Mr. Cohen as he interviews the candidate for Gustavo’s previous position. He is unpleasantly shocked when he realizes his new coworker is none other than Eliecer Mejia, his sister’s murderer. Once the interview is finished, he follows Eliecer home intent on avenging his sister’s death. His attempt fails, but he discovers that Eliecer is not alone in the city, as he claimed during the interview. A young woman and a girl, Miriam and Ester, are with him but appear to be held against their will. The days go by, and as if everything else wasn’t enough, Gustavo learns that Eliecer is attempting to ensnare Neta. He wants to warn her of the danger she’s in, but it’s too late.
The covid19 pandemic arrives. The hotel closes. Eliecer manages to lock himself and Neta in her apartment. He discovers text messages of sexual nature between Neta and Gustavo and uses that to blackmail her. He demands access to the hotel’s basement so that he can hide Ester and Miriam. On his part, Gustavo, in addition to wanting to save Neta, remains obstinate on taking revenge against Eliecer. One night, he follows him to the hotel and manages to rescue Miriam and Ester. Meanwhile, Margarita, worried that she hasn’t heard back from Gustavo for a prolonged period of time, goes in search of him to the hotel and gets kidnapped by Eliecer. Just as Gustavo and Eliecer are negotiating an exchange, Miriam and Ester vanish into thin air, taking advantage of the fact Gustavo is drunk again. Having no other options, Gustavo goes to the hotel to look for Margarita and Neta, who are locked in the supply room. When everything appears lost, Miriam and Ester return to help Gustavo; They too have business to settle with Eliecer. In the meantime, Eliecer appears to have contracted Covid. His addiction to cigarettes makes his condition deteriorate quickly and thus he’s more easily defeated. A fierce fight ensues between Eliecer and Gustavo. The latter gets off easy with a blow to the head, but it is Neta who delivers the final blow to Eliecer.
It appears as if everyone is safe and sound, when Eliecer’s anonymous boss arrives at the hotel in the company of another man; it is Michael Pereira and Mr. Cohen. Micheal, the leader of the human trafficking ring, points a gun at Margarita’s head demanding his merchandise. All seems lost for Neta, Gustavo and Margarita, but Mr. Cohen reveals himself as an undercover FBI agent, and Neta as his informant. Pereira is arrested.
After a stay at the hospital, during which time Gustavo is only able to communicate with Margarita through Facetime, he is discharged. Sitting on a bench outside the hospital, he is witness to the desolation brought on by the pandemic. Neta visits him and they have closure. Finally, the mysterious Miriam and Ester appear out of nowhere, offering Gustavo a glass of water as a symbol of the start of his new life.
