Synopsis/Details
At the beginning of the story, we meet James Winthrop, a young man. The first time we see it, he studies paranormal and occultist subjects in his home office. Next time we see him, he is in a discussion with his ex-tutor, who tries to persuade James to assume the family business. It's useless. James has just one obsessive goal: to become a supernatural investigator. That´s a new profession that came out fifteen years ago when a strange, not-clear-until-now event made the global population to believe in the supernatural. In order to pursue his career, James gets a job at an office run by Mosley Hunter, an old and experienced supernatural investigator. Whereupon they go to Leadville, Colorado, to investigate the death of Mason, a mine owner. His daughter, Emily, believes the father has been killed by a supernatural entity. Soon in the investigation, it stays clear that James and Mosley diverge in their methods: the former believes in science to detect and capture the supernatural, whereas the latter believes in occultism. Despite the divergence, they eventually figured out Mason has been killed by a knocker, a horrendous creature which is a legend amongst the miners. They fail in capturing the creature with a scientific device provided by James. After a tense moment, when the knocker almost kills James, Hunter defeats the creature using herbs and a flashlight. The story ends with James in his home office again. This time, we realized why he is too obsessed by being a supernatural investigator: he suspects his parents have been killed by a supernatural entity.
