Synopsis/Details
The story is written in an ‘a day in the life’ fashion, chronicling seven sporadic days in the life of our protagonist, Johnny Green, who strives to balance his ambition of becoming a successful writer with a life of drug abuse and unhealthy friendships. The audience experiences a ‘real time’ feeling as they spend each day with Johnny, while he navigates the ensuing events each day has to offer. The inciting incident occurs by the end of Day 1, when Johnny is lured by his friends (particularly Fish and Latiff), into becoming a small-scale drug dealer. In the subsequent days, Johnny meets his love interest, Operbia, an innocent young lady who brings some light into his life. Their relationship is however tested, as things do not go as smoothly for them. Each day, on an as and when basis, we are presented with new characters which he either already knows or meets for the first time, and which generally drive his story forward, accompanied by his internal monologue (voice-over) offering exposition. All in all, I Am Johnny Green is a dramatic life story that encompasses a focal group of characters, many sub-characters, the harsh realities of millennial Ghanaian youth culture, true to life conversations (with a lot of pidgin English), and true to life characters drawn from my own experiences as a struggling Ghanaian writer.
