Synopsis/Details
Marcus, a black gay atheist, symbolically stands in a doorway, one foot in reality (death) and one foot in his next life (birth). The "Threshold" of the door is where our story unfolds in Purgatory before reincarnation occurs. In Purgatory, Marcus meets Elian, a quirky, eccentric character who may or may not be God, and Elian explains that Marcus has died. Even though Marcus believes he is dreaming, it doesn't explain the Celtic Cross he discovers around his neck. Together, they move from one conflicting moment to the next in Marcus's life, and it quickly becomes apparent that Marcus can't face certain truths about his life, and has an inability to express love, especially to his husband, Daniel. Marcus has to come to terms with his denial, face the truth, and tell Daniel he loves him before moving on to his next life. Going from one moment to the next, Marcus is given a chance to re-examines his life, unravelling the problems and getting to the source of all his issues in life. Elian shows him how he affected, influenced, and made a difference in his family and friends' lives, and realizes Daniel being religious and having a strong faith in their love, has placed his Cross around Marcus next, a sign that he will always be with him. As Marcus is being reincarnated, Marcus phases back in forth between the moment he's about to die and the moment of reincarnation and it becomes apparent that his time with Elian has taken a split second at the moment of his death. Marcus tells Daniel how much he loves him, something he could never say before and simultaneously dies and is reincarnated.
