Synopsis/Details
Jem & I is a gripping psychological drama that weaves together elements of tragic romance, crime drama, and supernatural thriller. At its core, it delves into profound grief of losing a loved one and the mental and psychological damage that lack of closure can bring. Jemma Manning, a Los Angeles-based marketing executive, wife, and mother of three, is blindsided when her twin brother, Isaac, unexpectedly takes his own life in their childhood home in Briarwood, New Jersey. Jemma and her parents, Janette, and Liam, return to Briarwood for Isaac’s funeral and to prepare to finally sell their house. While Jemma and her parents both relocated to California, Isaac remained in New Jersey and continued living in their family home until his death. Because he didn’t leave a suicide note, Isaac’s family is unfortunately left with nothing but unanswered questions. The family deals with Isaac’s death in different ways. Jemma privately laments on how distance, life changes, and time led to her and Isaac growing apart, while Janette throws herself into cooking to stay busy, and Liam avoids mentioning Isaac’s name altogether. One night at dinner, Liam reveals that a neighbor informed him about how a dead body was recently discovered in the woods of Hillside, the town next to Briarwood. The timeline suggests it occurred around the same time as Isaac’s death. While Jemma’s parents dismiss it as an unfortunate coincidence, Jemma, who has been plagued by unsettling, disjointed dreams of running through the woods and washing blood off her hands in the bathroom, can’t shake the growing sense of unease within her. Despite herself, she begins to secretly suspect that her brother may have had something to do with the body found in the woods. Her suspicions deepen when she learns that the body belonged to the husband of Isaac’s beloved ex-girlfriend, Avery. After an unexpected wildfire near her parents' house in Los Angeles forces them to fly back home for a while, Jemma remains alone in the Briarwood house. By day, she reflects on her and Isaac’s relationship, their childhood and adolescence, while packing away his belongings. At night, she continues to be haunted by extremely vivid and personal dreams, often involving an adult Isaac and glimpses into his life. Things take a surreal turn when Jemma witnesses a shocking event in her dreams, leading her to realize that Isaac’s untimely death is just scratching the surface of a darker, more unsettling reality. And the only way to unravel the truth and find answers to lingering questions is to dive into the depths of her subconscious. She’s got to stay asleep. Think Past Lives meets A Nightmare on Elm Street.
