Synopsis/Details
SUNNY (52) is a former aidworker who’s determined to write a memoir. After writing to KEANU REEVES about whether it’s too late to have kids, he moves in as her imaginary muse and confidant. Sunny, having given up on having kids, is asked to foster ANDY, a hard-to-place 10-year-old boy. When Andy watches HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON he decides he’s a dragon. There are two concurrent stories: > In Andy’s nighttime dream dragon realm, he is a young dragon on a quest to free his dragon father who has been captured by Dojovic dragons. His mother, father and Sunny are dragons in the dragon realm. In the real world Andy tears up the house, roaring at Sunny as he sleepwalks and basically driving her to the edge. He is bullied at school but forms friends in the Dungeons and Dragons club. Sunny meanwhile struggles with the grief of having lost her father, a doctor, and her mom, who has dementia. Andy has a magical relationship with Sunny’s mom, melting Sunny’s heart. Keanu tells her to embrace Andy’s imaginary world. Sunny tells Andy about Keanu and treats Andy like a dragon. Andy accepts Keanu as real and they become a strange family. When Andy finds a box of photos of a little girl SOOKY who lived in the house in the 70s he enrolls her into his nighttime dragon quest to find his father. Andy’s nighttime dragon realm reflects his real world, incorporating his fears and new relationships. He learns truth upon terrible truth about his past. His father is not his biological father and pretended to be in the military so he could tour schools talking about his war hero days. The dragons are Dojovics because the policeman who rescued Andy was called Sergeant Dojovic. There’s the push-pull as both Sunny and Andy, two people who can’t open about the loss of their family, have to relate and form a new family. After Andy discovers a skeleton in the basement – actually the skeleton Sunny’s Dad had hanging in his doctor’s office – he runs away. The biological grandmother he’s never met is asked to take him but ultimately rejects him. Andy is returned to Sunny, remorseful and ready for a genuine connection. Sunny’s mom dies soon after. At the funeral Sunny can’t finish her speech and Andy takes over, talking about Sunny’s mom and how she became his real grandmother, about what family really means. Behind him flash photos of Sunny’s mom’s past life, including her daughter, nicknamed Sooky. Andy realizes that Sunny and Sooky are the same person. Sooky, his lovable companion on his dragon quest, is actually Sunny, the woman trying to be his new mom. Sunny and Andy are finally able to accept the loss of their respective biological families and forge a new life together. Keanu Reeves is My Muse My Son Is A Dragon is about family and about the power of imagination to heal. NOTE: Children will see this as a family dramedy and dragon adventure. Adults will see dark themes about the trauma of child abuse and grief. The references to abuse are deliberately obtuse.
