Synopsis/Details
Frank Hoffman is a retired Karate instructor living alone after the untimely passing of his wife and adult son. One night, facing bank foreclosure he intends to break the news to his daughter (Sam) who works at a local sports bar. There he winds up in an altercation when a team of pro MMA fighters stir up trouble. Frank intervenes, one of them takes a swing, but Frank skillfully puts him down for the count. Moments later he finds himself in a faceoff against their leader (Greyson). Words are exchanged, the fight-team leaves, but the entire conflict is caught on video by the bar’s patrons and uploaded to social media. By morning the incident’s gone viral with the Mixed Martial Arts community. Old video footage surfaces of Frank competing in full contact karate, and soon a fight promoter seeking to cash in on the hype contacts Frank with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to step into the MMA cage for a grudge match against the undefeated Greyson. Desperate to keep a roof over his head, Frank accepts the fight. Sam begrudgingly agrees to corner her father, but insists he learn grappling to counter Greyson’s elite wrestling. An elderly judo coach (Sensei) joins their cause and together they begin developing Frank’s skills as a mixed martial artist. Meanwhile Greyson trains in the toxic alpha-bro environment of his gym “Brutality MMA” under his sadistic coach (Neil) who bullies his fighters with condescension, ruthlessness and ego. The day of the fight, Frank and Greyson have a competitive contest, but midway through the second round Greyson takes frank down, secures a dominant position and rains down blows, only to be caught by a rogue knee-strike off his back. The illegal technique knocks Greyson out and the referee is forced to disqualify Frank. With the disqualification, Frank earns just enough to stay a few more months in his home. To make matters worse, Frank collapses backstage from a heart problem, he’s taken to the E.R. by a member of Greyson’s team (Jordan), who respects and admires Frank. At the hospital the E.R. Doctor gives him the bad news: He should stop fighting, but Frank conceals his condition from his daughter and sensei. With the promoter offering an immediate rematch, Frank unexpectedly turns it down, planning to downsize his life, and move in with his daughter. Simultaneously Greyson seeks to redeem himself in the eyes of the MMA community after being knocked out, regardless of official victory, his pride is wounded and he demands a rematch. The stakes only get higher when the middleweight belt is vacated, opening up a chance for Greyson and Frank to battle for the undisputed 185lb title, and all the money that comes with a championship. At first, Frank avoids the media storm surrounding the fight, but Sam, unaware of her father’s medical condition, seeing his shame and anxiety, takes it upon herself to step in and represent her father and negotiates a 5-round main event on pay-per-view with the promoter. An endeavor that if successful will finally get the bank off her father’s back and secure their family home. Meanwhile the toxic environment at Brutality MMA becomes too much for Jordan and he defects to join Frank in preparing to fight his former teammate. With his team finally complete, Frank takes the training to a whole new level to prepare for a five round war. Before long he and Greyson meet for the big showdown. Frank steps into the cage for the final time, secretly risking his own health, can he make it five rounds with the young buck, or will father time finally catch up with “the K.O. Boomer”...

The Writer: Alex Harris

Originally from Portland Oregon, I graduated with a BS in Communications (Video Production) from Southern Oregon University then moved to Los Angeles where I broke into the film industry as a PA, boom operator, then eventually working on set in the grip dept. for the last decade. I consider myself an amateur scholar, with interests ranging from martial arts to philosophy, but my true passion is filmmaking. I became a dolly-grip so I could watch directors/actors up close and personal, stealing to do's and don'ts for my own career as a director. I have written a dozen or so scripts to date, but only one that I feel can knock the doors down and earn some representation... Go to bio
