Synopsis/Details
Mimi is still dressed in her Wedding dress, when she gets out of her husband's new car. The year is 1958. She is going to look around the house she grew up in, in this upper-middle class American suburb. The happy couple, she and Carl, are 20 and 22 years of age. Mimi goes through the empty house starting upstairs. She hears voices coming from bedrooms. Entering them she sees light move on walls and hears conversations from her Past. The shards of light could be stands of Sunlight coming through curtains. Nothing seems unnatural yet. Mimi is filled with emotion. But is happy for the cathartic release afforded by the nostalgia. However, on the landing at the top of the stairs before descending, she hears a painful conversation between her parent, her brother and she. Standing there she feels something rush like wind though her body.. She gasps, but is not frightened.
Mimi goes to leave and opens the door. Suddenly, a bright light blinds he. She averts her eyes and steps over the threshold, and discovers that the light is from one of three spot lights. There is a film crew in her front yard. Mimi steps down the steps onto the film set and sees a woman that looks very much like her. Though, she won't acknowledge this until later. She is confused at first, but soon it dawns on her that these people are trespassing. She goes from from person to person complaining and asking who's in charge. She is ignored, rather rudely. It is then she realizes that an actress is playing a character that looks a lot like her. And that the car at the curb is the same as Carl's. Bit that the driver, even though being dressed similarly bars only passing resemblance to her husband. It slowly occurs to her that they might be making a movie about someone she knows. However, full realization comes when someone comes to the Director carrying a 'blood-spattered' wedding dress, realization hits her like a freight train at full throttle. During these scenes film crew particulars relating to production also take place weaving-in a second narrative.
Mimi 'remembers' everything now. She tells herself about the fatal crash of the two happy newlyweds. She turns and sees that the film crew have disappeared. The Sun is low. She runs into the street. She looks down at her hands and feet. She now thinks that she is a ghost that has been haunting the house. Mimi looks up and down the street. "I can go anywhere," she tells herself. A 1956 Police car pulls up to the curb. A Policeman gets out of the car, the young Bride in her wedding dress watching. The Policeman goes to the front door and rings the bell. Suddenly, Mimi exclaims, "No!" and dashes for the house passing through the police car. A second later, she passes through the waiting Policeman and solid oak door as it opens. A 30 year old man is there in modern casual dress. No-one is there. The street is empty.
The man turns back into the house and shuts the door. He goes back to his computer. We see the familiar 'screenplay format' and learn the man is a screenplay writer. He sit down. A message has been left by one of the characters he has created. A message relevant to the audience and the Screenwriter. Mimi in a double twist thinks she has died. But in the end, she realizes she is a character in a fictional story. And she hurries to get back home to her page. (Note: Ending presented here is simpler than the screenplay. And better for it in my opinion.)
