Thomas a researcher and his lab assistant Andy have developed a procedure that enhances the judgment center or frontal lobe of the brain. When the amygdala or the emotional center is activated, it diverts energy to the frontal lobe. This causes more rational thinking. It would be a breakthrough for society as true rehabilitation. It could reform even the most hardened criminals. However, the experiment requires a complex computer, which initially they can’t afford.
Thomas pushes on with his work and asks the prison warden Floyd Haines to allow them to experiment on inmates. At first, Floyd refuses but later gets a call from the governor who is interested in poll numbers, forces Floyd to allow testing of inmates with the hopes of generating positive publicity.
Floyd convinces Thomas that Simon would be the ideal candidate. Floyd is convinced Simon would cause the experiment to fail. Floyd’s plan seemed to work after several false starts.
Thomas purchases new computer servers and cooling units with a second mortgage on his house, without his wife Kathryn’s knowledge. He worked through the night and altered a line of code on the algorithm, which he believed was a problem.
The experiment is a success. Another experiment is carried out on another inmate named Jacob to validate the process. Simon and Jacob are changed, men. News organizations want interviews.
Thomas and Kathryn are invited to the Governor’s Ball. Governor offers Thomas support but no funding at the moment.
Buford a co-worker of Kathryn had written an article about Thomas’ experiment. He also pitched her his book about illegal profits from kickbacks to judges with high incarceration rates. Kathryn is furious that Buford had been working with Thomas and only mildly interested in Buford’s manuscript. Buford convinces her to go out to dinner.
Kathryn goes to Buford’s apartment and finds him dead at his desk. Police uncover suicide note and child porn on his computer. They are convinced it was suicide.
Kathryn is distraught and blames Thomas and his experiment for Buford’s death.
Simon and Jacob with their newfound intellect devise an ingenious way to escape from prison.
Thomas gets pressure from unknown sources to stop his experiments. He is offered significant compensation. Thomas is obsessed with experiment and refuses to relent until he learns his family is in peril. He accepts a request for an interview and before going on air learns of prison break. Thomas goes on national television to announce his experiment a failure.
A squad of men dressed in black uniforms with automatic weapons surrounds Thomas’ house later than night. They are interested in securing the algorithm with the help of Andy in the background.
Simon and Jacob rescue them. All escape but one. His name is Raymond Dykes.
After some torture and the implantation of a tracking device, it is discovered that he works for Ivan Shuster, a CEO of a conglomerate of companies interested in suppressing Thomas’ research because of their political ambitions and the profits from prisons.
News outlets won’t let go of the story and continues to report on the implications of the experiments. There is a coordinated plan by unknown sources to debunk Thomas’ work as being soft on crime.
Simon with the help of Thomas’ autistic son Josh and daughter Liv devise a plan to expose Ivan and his company of profiteers by attaching an audio file of their secret meeting on the Internet. Every newscast about the experiment would play this audio file explaining how these experiments would cause their companies to lose prison profits.
The company is in an uproar and decides to vote Ivan out of leadership to distant themselves from the scandal.
Ivan takes matters into his own hands and kidnaps Thomas and his wife Kathryn with the intent of giving them a permanent vacation and destroying the algorithm.
Thomas and Kathryn are loaded in a shipping crate on a cargo plane so they can be dropped into the ocean.
Ivan chokes Thomas until he is unconscious. He smashes Kathryn’s head against the wall of the plane.
Jacob arrives at the airport and drives a van while Simon shoots the tires of the plane. Simon boards the plane while it taxis down the runway.
Later, Liv arrives with Josh who devised a way to disrupt the GPS and wireless systems of the plane with his laptop before it can take off.
Simon discovers Ivan has a Gemini tattoo on his chest. Simon realizes Ivan is actually the twin brother who killed his lieutenant. Ivan had undergone extensive plastic surgery. Ivan is gleeful he can take revenge for his brother’s death, however, Simon gets the upper hand on Ivan.
In a fierce struggle, Simon is knocked out from an explosion. All appears lost when Kathryn in an act of desperation sneaks up from behind kills Ivan with a crowbar.
Thomas reconciles with Kathryn, Liv, and Josh while Simon and Jacob remain free at least for the time being. Thomas is free to continue his work for the betterment of society and Kathryn can pursue her work as a top publisher but not without the support of the entire family.
